There are two great Lockheed Constellation restoration projects being undertaken.  (Hello Red Bull, are you paying attention?) We are big Connie fans.

Project #1: Columbine

1143492391_4284f7ba61_mWe first got to see this magnificent aircraft (Columbine I) in August 2008 at the Pima Museum in Arizona.  If you have even a passing interest in aviation, put this place on your bucket list.    This aircraft was used by General Dwight Eisenhower.  Then came Columbine II, and was used by President Dwight Eisenhower.  This was the first Air Force One.  This aircraft is now on its way to Virginia for restoration.  Last year the process of engine tests was undertaken, as the next video shows.

Yesterday the aircraft left Arizona and landed in Texas on its way to Virginia.  Here is a link with videos of that takeoff. (turn up the volume)

Project #2: Lufthansa

A far more ambitious project is being undertaken the technical whizzes at Lufthansa Technik. Under the leadership of The German American Aviation Heritage Foundation a Lockheed SuperStar is being restored to flying condition to take passengers!    The L-1649A Super Star was the last and most significant model of the legendary Lockheed Constellation series.  More on the project and aircraft can be found here.  This will be the best Connie ever made when it flies again because of the Technik team’s work.  You can even participate in this project by donating to its work.  Lufthansa Group’s involvement is to be cheered and appreciated. The Connie will join the airline’s other grand old lady, Tante Ju.

Then the data bug got me, making me a curious Avgeek seeking data-driven logic. Also, I appreciate conversations with smart people from whom I learn so much. Summary: I am very fortunate to work with and converse with great people.

  1. I decided recently that when I become rich enough to buy my own private jet (should be any day now, right?), I won’t actually spend the money on a private jet. I’ll spend the money restoring a Constellation to flying condition.
