Boeing continues taking new MAX orders this week, with lessor SMBC Aviation Capital signing up for 25 incremental MAX 8s on Tuesday. The aircraft will be delivered in 2028 and 2029.

The latest order brings the total backlog of the Dublin-based lessor to 81 MAX 8s. “In addition to the 81 737 MAX aircraft on order, SMBC Aviation Capital currently owns or manages a total of 65 737 MAX aircraft, out of a total current portfolio of 711 owned and managed aircraft,” the lessor says. SMBC has placed MAX aircraft with airlines like Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, flydubai, Flair, TUI, Swoop, Lynx Air, Smartlynx, and Aeromexico.

SMBC placed its first MAX order for 80 aircraft in November 2014. This was followed up by an order for 10 in June 2015, 20 in June 2018, and four in April 2019. In June 2020, the lessor deferred deliveries of 68 aircraft by four years until 2025-2027. This was six months before the MAX was re-certified again in the US after the two fatal accidents. At the time, SMBC had firm orders for 89 MAX aircraft out of 133

commitments.
