Aerolíneas Argentinas New CEO - Key Challenges Ahead

Post-presidential election, with Javier Milei's victory confirming him as Argentina's new president, certain realities surfaced. Milei, during his campaign, had been vocal about the fate of Aerolíneas Argentinas being a critical issue from day one. However, the nation's multitude of challenges relegated the airline's future to a less immediate priority. With Milei's inauguration, urgent matters like inflation and currency devaluation overshadowed any immediate actions regarding Aerolíneas. Nevertheless, the airline's executive chair needed a new occupant following Pablo Ceriani’s departure. This week marked a significant transition for the airline. The board accepted Ceriani’s resignation and appointed Fabián Lombardo, previously Director of Commercial, Network, and Route Management during Anibal Fernandez's presidency. While appearing to continue the existing strategy, this decision invites a more nuanced, perhaps slightly cynical, interpretation. Ceriani’s tenure, starting amid the pandemic, was notably effective. He could have easily relied on the substantial state funding the airline historically received, a practice that continued even under Mauricio Macri’s administration. To date, Aerolíneas Argentinas has received approximately $8 billion since its nationalization to offset its operational inefficiencies. Survival in jeopardy Yet, Ceriani looked past the immediate crisis. He recognized that without significant change, Aerolíneas' survival was in jeopardy. In an early COVID crisis Zoom meeting, he bluntly stated, “If we don’t adapt, we will close.” His leadership initiated necessary reforms, even as the airline operated on a minimal scale due to health and border restrictions. He streamlined the airline by merging Austral Líneas Aéreas into Aerolíneas’ management and negotiated with unions. These negotiations, happening at a time when pilots and staff were less positioned to assert their demands, resulted in increased operational flexibility and efficiency. These changes improved aircraft utilization and narrowed the competitive gap with rivals like Flybondi and JetSMART. Such strategic moves, among others, transformed Aerolíneas Argentinas. The airline evolved from needing $700 million annually to maintain operations to claiming no state funding in 2023 and reporting a $32 million profit in Ceriani’s final year. Lombardo's pivotal role in these achievements suggests his appointment is more a recognition of the path toward profitability the company has taken. However, Milei's campaign promises and initial decisions add another layer to this scenario. He proposed transferring ownership of the airline to its employees and eventually severing all state funding. Given the airline's chronic deficits, this strategy was tantamount to a closure, albeit indirectly. The pressing question is whether the airline can sustain its recent self-sufficiency amidst a deepening recession, escalating peso devaluation, and soaring inflation, collectively making Argentina a less affordable destination for foreign tourists. Lombardo is well-acquainted with the aviation industry, having held executive roles in Brazilian Varig, TAP Air Portugal, and GOL Linhas Aéreas. He now faces what may be the greatest challenge of his career. Ceriani’s words from that critical Zoom meeting, “adapt or close,” resonate strongly. Lombardo must extend this ethos to “excel to survive.”
