As demand for international travel continues to grow among Latin American travelers, LATAM Airlines will operate four weekly flights from Santiago (SCL), Chile to Melbourne (MEL) starting next December, restoring the frequency it maintained before the COVID-19 crisis.”In less than a year, LATAM Airlines has increased its services by 40% in the region and will operate 14 weekly flights in December,” stated Cristopher Ellis, LATAM’s Country Manager for Oceania.LATAM will offer 2,416 weekly seats on the route from December 2024, operated by Boeing 787-9 aircraft.

LATAM’s Schedule in Melbourne

  • Santiago – Melbourne flight LA 805 SCL 00:55 – 05:25 (+1) MEL / Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday.
  • Melbourne – Santiago flight LA 804 MEL 12:00 – 11:00 SCL / Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday.

LATAM returned to Melbourne in September 2023 and transported 23,431 passengers that year, according to the Chilean Civil Aviation Board (JAC). In 2019, the airline moved 103,637 travelers.

Australia’s capital will also benefit from LATAM’s strategy. Starting October 27, 2024, LATAM will resume nonstop flights between Santiago (SCL), Chile, and Sydney after four years, offering four weekly flights on Boeing 787-9 aircraft.

In addition to this new non-stop route, the company will maintain its operations with a connection in Auckland (AKL), New Zealand. However, using the same aircraft model will reduce the number of weekly flights from seven to four.

In addition to its services in Sydney, LATAM also operates in Melbourne (MEL), offering three weekly flights on its Boeing 787-9. The introduction of this new route will not only complement LATAM’s existing operations in the region but will also compete with Qantas, which currently offers three weekly flights during the low season and increases to between four and seven flights per week during peak times in the southern hemisphere’s winter or summer high seasons.According to data provided by the Chilean Civil Aviation Board (JAC), in 2023, 147,990 passengers traveled to Sydney with LATAM and Qantas, a 40.7% decrease compared to 2019 levels. 83,504 and 23,431 travelers were transported to Auckland and Melbourne, respectively, reflecting a 17.9% and 77.5% decrease compared to pre-pandemic numbers.
