In the week that Embraer lost out to Airbus on the huge order from AirAsia X for 150 A220-300s

plus 150 options, the Brazilians remain confident they will strike back. “We have campaigns in all regions. We are optimistic that we will have a good year. Not as good as last year, when we had amazing sales, but this year will be good as well”, President Francisco Gomes Neto said today during the earnings call.

AirAsia X Chairman Tony Fernandes disclosed on Wednesday that he had been looking at the Embraer E2-family as well, but selected the A220 instead. When AirInsight asked him if he thought that Embraer had been given a fair chance to compete, Gomes Neto replied: “It is good to see that another low-cost carrier in the region recognises the benefits of a small narrowbody jet. It is a trend that we expect to continue. Obviously, we would have liked to add AirAsia to our global family of 24 E2 operators. But we knew from the beginning that our competitor had huge incumbency in that airline and could offer earlier production slots.”
