Regional jets are no longer a growth industry in North America, thanks to the myopic Scope Clause. This policy has crimped new technologies from entering the market – it started with the Mitsubishi SpaceJet and Embraer E175-E2. There are projects underway trying to break through this limit, but the graveyard of attempts grows steadily. The latest was the MaeveJet. A promising design with novel powerplants – even though the Pratt & Whitney won’t discuss it at all.
Thinking about this conundrum led as to do an analysis of the market as it is now. We defined four variables: Aircraft Technical Efficiency, Passenger Revenue Efficiency, Systemwide Transport Efficiency, and Total Structural Capacity Efficiency. We then created an Index combining these.
