bombed iran 777
We have covered Iranian commercial aircraft acquisitions before. This week, the US Treasury sanctioned 36 targets across Iran’s aviation sector on September 8 — 27 Iranian airlines, effectively every carrier the country has, plus nine third-country intermediary companies in the UAE, Turkey, and Malaysia. It’s the first wave under a new Iran-aviation determination the Treasury announced August 24, which means more is coming.
The detail that actually matters for this industry: Mahan Air, sanctioned since 2011 for logistical support to Iran’s IRGC, received at least three Boeing 777s this past summer. Treasury’s account: the aircraft came from a retired fleet, passed through a Sharjah-based company called ECT Aviation Support, picked up temporary registrations, and moved through a second intermediary in Turkey. That’s not a one-off. It mirrors a 2025 transfer of five Boeing 777-200ERs using the same playbook.
