Boeing has spent a decade circling the middle of the market without landing. The New Midsize Airplane studies started in 2015, got shelved in 2020, and remain under reevaluation today with no metal cut and no production decision. Meanwhile, the fleet the NMA was meant to replace keeps aging, Airbus has sold out its A321 line years in advance, and a well-funded startup with a different architecture broke ground on an 8-million-square-foot factory aimed at exactly the seat count Boeing has been looking at.
The market segment is real. The indecision is the story. And the indecision has a specific, nameable cause: Not “how big”, when it should be “what mission.”
