The FAA is requesting the inspection of more General Electric GE90s, as the regulator has reason to believe that a powder metal contamination issue is affecting more parts in the high-pressure turbine area than previously thought. A notice for proposed rulemaking will be issued on September 5, which succeeds an Airworthiness Directive. The GE90 powers models of the Boeing 777-200 and -300.
, GE Aerospace notified the FAA of contamination issues since June 2021, first on the CFM LEAP and in June 2022 on the GEnx. The same problem was also found on the GE90, for which an AD was released in September 2022 that became effective on January 17, 2023.
