India’s Adani expands from airports into MRO |

Adani Defence Systems & Technologies Ltd. (ADSTL) signed a binding share purchase agreement to acquire 85.8 percent shareholding in Air Works, India’s largest private sector MRO company with the largest pan-India footprint. Air Works offers an end-to-end bouquet of aviation services spanning line maintenance, heavy checks, interior refurbishment, painting, redelivery checks, avionics, and asset management services to its Indian and global customers. The company undertakes base maintenance for narrowbody, turboprop, and rotary aircraft from its Hosur, Mumbai, and Kochi facilities, with regulatory approvals from civil aviation authorities of more than 20 countries. In addition to being a market leader in civil aviation, Air Works has built significant capabilities in defense MRO, executing projects for key platforms of the Indian Navy and Indian Air Force. Commenting on the acquisition, Mr Jeet Adani, Director of Adani Airports, said the Indian aviation industry is at a transformative juncture. It is now the third-largest globally and on track to induct over 1,500 aircraft in the coming years. “For us, creating a presence in the MRO sector is more than just a strategic step—it’s a commitment to building an integrated aviation services ecosystem that strengthens the backbone of India’s aviation infrastructure. Together, we are excited to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of India’s skies,” Adani said. Mr. Ashish Rajvanshi, CEO of Adani Defence & Aerospace, added that the company's vision “is to deliver a full-spectrum MRO offering—spanning line, base, component, and engine maintenance—to meet the needs of both the commercial and defense aviation sectors. In a time when Aatmanirbharta (self-dependence) in defense is a national imperative, we stand fully committed to scaling domestic capabilities to serve both our armed forces and the broader aviation sector.” Why this makes business sense for the Adani group This is seen as a logical move by the Adani group, which has a presence in India's airports, ports, defense, power, and agro sectors. Adani is India's largest private-sector airport operator, with seven functioning airports, including Mumbai, where Air Works is present. The Adani group is also developing a greenfield airport in Navi Mumbai, which is scheduled to become functional next year. Indian airlines have ordered over 1,500 aircraft, all requiring maintenance during their life cycles. In addition, India is acquiring many military aircraft and helicopters, which will also need servicing at MRO facilities, which Air Works can provide. This opens up a whole new business opportunity for the Adani group.
