First Quarter Airline Earnings – Warning Bells?

Care to share?

Earnings season is underway, and several key airlines reported their first quarter 2025 results.  While results and outlooks differ by carrier, the one constant is that airlines are rescinding their full year guidance amidst the economic confusion being caused by the Trump administration and its economic policies.

Let’s take a quick look on a carrier by carrier basis:

Delta Air Lines

Delta Air Lines reported its earnings earlier this month.  While Delta had a good quarter

, it is seeing low-end domestic traffic under pressure, with premium and international remaining bright spots for the carrier.  The carrier pulled its 2025 guidance, citing Trump tariffs hurting bookings and cut its June quarter outlook.  What was to be the “best financial year in our history” with a growth in capacity of 3-4% in the second half is now to be level with 2024 capacity.  The company pulled its guidance, as it cannot predict the economic future, particularly an economic recession resulting from Trump tariff policies.
