Boeing 737 MAX Deliveries Hit by Quality Glitch

That quality escape thing rears its ugly head again. But it appears to be a minor issue caused by an internal problem. The news of the quality escape drowns out the excellent news that Boeing is delivering faster Airbus. What Happened Boeing disclosed the issue on March 10, describing it this way: "Our 737 programme is performing rework on a group of airplanes to fix wires that have small scratches due to a machining error. This ensures they meet our quality standards before the airplanes are delivered." The machining error originated at Boeing's own Renton, Washington, facility — not a third-party supplier. Delivery Impact In March, through yesterday, Boeing performed 19 MAX first flights and made 5 deliveries. This is far slower than usual. There was a ~10-day delivery halt. Boeing maintained production at roughly 42 aircraft per month and has not revised its 2026 full-year delivery goal of 500 737s. Production Rate Context CEO Kelly Ortberg said 737 rates will increase in five-per-month increments, with at least six months between changes. The three current assembly lines are producing roughly 42 aircraft per month — Boeing's FAA-approved ceiling. Boeing's target is 50–60 per month by 2028, and CFM International's supply of Leap-1B is confirmed to cover Boeing's needs through Rate 47. A fourth assembly line in Everett is slated to open this summer for the MAX 10. 737 MAX 7 and 737 MAX 10 Certifications FAA approval of both models is expected this year, with the -10 following the -7 sign-off. Boeing recently restarted building 737-10s, with WestJet -10 rollouts among the first. A Separate but Concurrent FAA Action Shortly before the wiring disclosure, the FAA issued a separate directive requiring inspections for a ground-wire fault affecting the environmental control system on certain 737 MAX aircraft. The two issues appear unrelated, but the timing drew regulatory attention to electrical system integrity across the program. Market Reaction Boeing shares declined roughly 10.6% over the week following the disclosure — a reaction reflecting market sensitivity to quality issues more than a fundamental program crisis. Boeing is targeting a positive free cash flow of $1–3 billion for 2026, following a projected negative free cash flow for 2025. Boeing's confidence is warranted, as this chart shows. MAX production is currently focused on Renton. The dropoff in delivery days shows program maturity and improving industrialization. Boeing now delivers the MAX faster than Airbus delivers its competing models. Separately, Boeing moved nine 737 MAX orders from its active backlog to a reserve bucket for deals the company suspects may not be completed. Boeing ended February with a backlog of 6,151 aircraft, including 4,388 737s. Bottom Line The core signal here is the delivery gap between Boeing's production rate (~42/month) and its actual March delivery pace (near zero for ~10 days). If deliveries resume cleanly in the back half of March, Q1 is a timing story. If rework drags into April, it starts to look like a Q2 problem — and the "quality over speed" tension at the heart of the Ortberg recovery strategy becomes the real narrative.
