TAP Portugal has taken steps to ban the shipment of animals for experiments and also banned the shipment of body parts from endangered species. These moves follow discussions with PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, an organization dedicated to the creation and protection of the rights of all animals.
PETA spokesperson Mimi Bekhechi indicating that “TAP Portugal has taken a stance against industries that kill and exploit animals in the world. PETA is urging other airlines to follow their lead.
A number of airlines, including American, Delta, United, Air China, China Eastern, China Southern, TAM, El Al, Phillipine, Hainan and Vietnam Airlines currently ban transport of animals to laboratories. Delta and American have also banned hunting trophies and body parts of endangered species.
Surprisingly, the list of airlines banning transport of laboratory animals is primarily North American and Asian. TAP appears to be the first in Europe to join in this international battle. We wonder when the other European majors will join in this international effort.
