Aspiration vs Reality – Duopoly vs Supply Chain

Boeing's new North Line opens today. This is big news, and here's why. This line is dedicated to the MAX 10, arguably Boeing's second-most important model after the 777-9, which is awaiting certification. The North Line in Context Here's why the North Line is important: First 737 built outside Renton since production consolidated there in 1970. Located in the former widebody building (747/767/777), where space became available after the 747 wind-down. A dedicated MAX 10 line, which Boeing expects to get FAA certification by year-end. Renton's three existing lines moved from 42 to 47 jets/month. The North Line itself won't add rate capacity until early 2027, when Boeing targets 52/month; long-term ambition is 63, possibly as high as 70 if suppliers keep pace. The North Line starts in low-rate initial production (LRIP) — deliberately slow ramp, tied to FAA conformity sign-off. Context: this follows the Jan 2024 Alaska Airlines door-plug blowout that triggered the FAA production cap, lifted last October. Kelly Ortberg's framing: "we're not moving until the production system is stable" — no more pushing work down the line before it's ready. The MAX 10 accounts for roughly a third of the ~4,870 unfilled MAX orders; United and Ryanair are among the largest MAX 10 customers. Looking forward Near-term: Renton's three lines already moved from 42 to 47/month this summer. The North Line itself doesn't add rate capacity right away — it starts in low-rate initial production (LRIP), a deliberately slow ramp tied to FAA conformity sign-off. 2027 target: 52/month, with the North Line cited as the enabler for crossing that threshold. Long-term ambition: Kelly Ortberg floated 63/month as the standing goal, contingent on supplier capacity. The Stretch case: reporting has mentioned Boeing is analyzing feasibility of pushing as high as 70/month, though that's more speculative/exploratory than a stated target. First aircraft off North Line: MAX 10, pending FAA certification expected by year-end 2026. Reality Strikes In commercial aviation, hope springs eternal. There's a silver lining every time. It always sunrise, somewhere. Let's get back to reality. The supply chain cannot sustain the rates both OEMs are talking about. Here's the evidence. Airbus "Rate 75": A320 Family target of 75/month by 2027, up from roughly 60-65 today. Four FAL hubs (Toulouse, Hamburg, Mobile, Tianjin), each with multiple lines — Mobile and Tianjin both doubled capacity with second lines in late 2025. Boeing MAX ceiling: 47 now ? 52 by 2027 ? 63 long-term aspiration ? 70 as a "studying feasibility" stretch case. Single program family (737 only), four lines total once North Line activates, all still concentrated at two sites (Renton + Everett). So even Boeing's outer-bound aspiration (63, maybe 70) is below where Airbus expects to already be operating (75) by 2027. And Airbus's 75 target itself is showing strain — recent reporting notes Airbus has struggled to hit intermediate steps toward it, with engine supply (CFM LEAP-1A, Safran foundry issues) and Spirit integration cited as the binding constraints, not FAL capacity. The supply chain cannot meet even near-term targets. 'Aspirational' targets are a misnomer. Actual Production rate lags the public 47/month figure Using first-flight dates as the production proxy for Renton MAX (all variants, since PAE/North Line hasn't started shipping yet). Deliveries track almost identically, so this isn't a shipping lag sitting downstream of a healthy line. It's a genuine, sustained gap between what Boeing says the rate is and what our data shows is actually being rolled out at the FAL. WIP trend is actually improving, not building — with one exception Undelivered inventory (produced but not yet delivered) has fallen from roughly 130 aircraft in mid-2024 to 72–78 today. That's the opposite of a friction story — Renton has been steadily working down its backlog, not building one. The exception: 25 MAX 7s and 11 MAX 10s are sitting uncertified, some since 2019 and 2021 (ages of 1,200–2,479 days). These are stuck on FAA certification, not production friction — a separate, known story, but worth a footnote since it's confirmation of exactly how long the "gray tail" has been parked. Bottom Line The realized ~38/month baseline — not the stated 47 — is the honest starting point for judging whether 52 (2027) or 63-plus (aspirational) is plausible. If Renton hasn't been able to hold even its own stated current rate, the Airbus-comparison math gets considerably more skeptical in Boeing's favor — not because Boeing is closer to catching up, but because both are further from their targets than they're saying. If Airbus can't hit its numbers despite having suffered none of the disruption the MAX program has endured, the appropriate move for anyone underwriting these programs — lessors, finance teams, suppliers — is to dial back delivery-timing expectations across the board, not just Boeing's.
