The Airshow Was Weak. The Reason Matters. |

Commercial aviation is a long game. Orders placed today might not be delivered for several years. Airbus and Boeing have a single-aisle backlog for over a decade into the future. It is well-documented that the industry does not face a demand challenge. The #1 challenge is meeting that demand with deliveries. With that reality in mind, how might one look back at last week's air show? The Numbers If you only read the Farnborough event information, it was wonderful and best-ever. Look at the data instead. Here's a table providing the context. The trend is down, and it's not really about demand. [caption id="attachment_196247" align="aligncenter" width="660"] AirInsight[/caption] 2026's $84.7B is well below 2024's $105.8B, and every account of the show converges on the same explanation: production and delivery-slot scarcity, not softening orders. British Airways' Sean Doyle put it bluntly at the show: airlines now care more about a delivery date they can trust than about adding another number to an already sold-out backlog. That's the same thesis we've been building all month — Rate 75, the North Line, GE's parts-delinquency admission — showing up now in the order behavior itself. Airlines have stopped racing to order more because ordering more doesn't get them anything sooner. 2026 vs. 2024 is a fairer comparison than 2026 vs. 2025, since Farnborough and Paris alternate and aren't really apples-to-apples — Paris 2025 was structurally depressed by the Air India tragedy and Boeing's deliberate absence, not by underlying market conditions. The cleaner read is 2026 against 2024, both Farnborough, both post-recovery: down about 20% in dollar terms, with aircraft-order counts roughly flat (286 in 2024 vs. 353 firm in 2026), but total commitments, including options/MoUs, are actually below forecast and below the "genuinely new" bar analysts expected. Engines Engines told a different story than airframes at both 2024 and 2026 — 904 firm engine orders this year against 353 aircraft is a striking ratio, and it lines up with our GE Aerospace and Rolls-Royce coverage: airlines and lessors are locking in propulsion commitments (spares, future fleet, replacement engines) even as new-airframe order growth cools, which is exactly the upstream-constraint signal we've been tracking. Propulsion is becoming the binding constraint even more than airframes. Structural Change Boeing's near-total absence from Paris 2025 (post-Air India) makes any Boeing-vs-Airbus order share comparison across these three shows misleading unless you control for it. Farnborough 2026 is really the first "normal" head-to-head between the two OEMs since Farnborough 2024 — and on that comparison, Boeing actually outdrew Airbus in aircraft count for the first time in several cycles (173-178 vs. 154-164 depending on source), even while overall dollar volume fell. That's arguably the most interesting under-covered data point in the whole story: Boeing regaining relative order share while total market dollars shrink. This runs counter to the narrative that Boeing is still in a hole. Summary The show was weak, by the only two measures that matter — value and pre-show expectations: Down ~20% from 2024: $84.7B vs. $105.8B, the last comparable Farnborough-to-Farnborough benchmark. Missed its own forecast badly: analysts and IBA were projecting 800-875 aircraft commitments going in; the show delivered 353 firm (432 including options/MoUs, and only 229 of those genuinely new business). That's less than half of what was expected. Multiple independent outlets called it explicitly: Aviation Business News's own headline was "the reality check airshow"; AvioRadar noted static displays were thin and corporates left early. The one place it wasn't weak: airframe order count held up reasonably well (353 firm vs. 286 in 2024), and Boeing beat Airbus for the first time in a few cycles. So it's not that airlines stopped wanting airplanes — it's that dollar volume and total deal flow both came in soft, and the show's own framing makes it clear that's a supply-constraint story, not a demand one.
