American’s Widebody Puzzle Likely Favors Boeing |

American Airlines is sending two contradictory signals this month. On one side: a voluntary unpaid leave program offering 1,205 flight attendants — about 4% of the cabin crew workforce — a paid-nothing September, after fuel costs forced six domestic route suspensions and an earlier-than-planned fall schedule. On the other: a live request for proposals to both Boeing and Airbus for American's first new wide body order since 2018, aimed squarely at closing a long-haul gap with Delta and United that's been years in the making. Trimming domestic staff for next month and preparing to commit billions to international growth are not, on their face, the same airline's priorities pointing the same direction. The Gap the wide body Order Is Meant to Close The numbers explain why Isom is moving now. American operates 137 wide bodies against Delta's 158 and United's 230. Its firm wide body backlog is just 19 aircraft — all 787-9s carried over from a 2018 order — while Delta has 78-84 on order and United has 134-135. American hasn't placed a wide body order in nearly eight years. That gap sits directly behind the $3 billion and $5 billion annual profit shortfalls against United and Delta, respectively, that we flagged after Q2 earnings — international, premium long-haul is where both rivals have been making the money American hasn't had the fleet to chase. The 777-9 Fits Better Than the Consensus Pick Suggests Most coverage of American's RFP assumes the contest narrows to the 787-10 or an Airbus A330neo, on the theory that American has avoided very-high-capacity wide bodies. That undersells what's actually in the fleet today: American operates 20 Boeing 777-300ERs, a 304-330 seat, four-cabin aircraft flying exactly the premium long-haul missions — London, Sydney, Hong Kong, São Paulo — that a 777-9 would take over. Boeing's product road map has the 777-9 as the direct successor to the 777-300ER. American already operates the predecessor type at real scale, and its oldest 777-200ERs, delivered between 1999 and 2006, are the aircraft Isom has cited retiring in the 2030s. A 777-9 order isn't a stretch into an unfamiliar category for American — it's fleet renewal along a path Boeing already built. The Overhang on the Other Side Separately, Boeing has a 777-9 problem. Emirates rejected the first 10 early-build aircraft outright. Lufthansa followed last week, confirming some of its allocated early frames will also be refused, with talks ongoing over which remaining airframes Boeing can bring up to standard at its own expense. Thirty-nine early-build 777-9s, assembled between 2019 and 2021 before certification requirements finished evolving, have been sitting at Everett since Boeing suspended 777X production in 2022. One, WH007, was scrapped rather than reworked. The problem isn't purely cosmetic or configuration-related either — Emirates' Tim Clark has been explicit that GE9X engine durability is part of what's driving the rejections, not just airframe standard. That creates a real, open question: what happens to the rest of those 39 frames if more launch customers follow Emirates and Lufthansa's lead. Boeing needs buyers who either don't mind taking early-standard aircraft at a discount, or are willing to wait for Boeing's dedicated retrofit line to bring them current. No airline would seriously consider that trade unless it has its own MRO capability to manage the rework risk directly rather than depend entirely on Boeing's timeline. American has exactly that, in Tulsa — one of the largest airline-owned maintenance bases in the world. There's a fleet-strategy angle worth adding too. American has consistently favored Boeing over Airbus in wide bodies, and Boeing's own 787 backlog stretches years out — a real mismatch against American's shorter-term fleet-renewal needs. Airbus could deliver A330-900s faster, but that means switching OEMs on a scale American hasn't done in wide bodies for years. Put those pieces next to each other — Boeing loyalty, a long 787 queue, in-house MRO capacity, and Boeing's own surplus of early 777-9s looking for a home — and it's at least worth asking what American and Boeing might construct together to close the gap on a faster timeline than a clean new-production order would allow. We're Not Connecting Those Dots Yet That's a real set of pieces that fit together on paper. It's still not confirmed, and it's worth being precise about the distance between "the pieces fit" and "this is happening." American has no existing 777X order — becoming a launch customer for early, problem-plagued airframes would mean absorbing someone else's rejected aircraft and someone else's unresolved engine-durability question, on a type American has never operated, at the same time it's trying to demonstrate fleet discipline to a market that's been skeptical of its capital allocation for years. That's a bigger ask than simply placing a clean new-production order, 777-300ER fleet fit or not. The more likely landing spots for Boeing's rejected frames are existing 777X customers looking to accelerate their own delivery position — Qatar Airways, still negotiating rather than rejecting, is the more logical near-term candidate. Bottom Line The real tension here doesn't need the 777-9 speculation to be interesting: American is genuinely retrenching domestically for fuel reasons while preparing a decade-defining wide body commitment internationally, from a financial position that's already $3-5 billion behind its two biggest rivals annually. Whether that commitment lands as a clean new 787-10 or A330neo order, or gets more complicated by Boeing's own 777-9 delivery problems, is a live question worth tracking as the RFP process plays out — not one we're prepared to answer yet.
