Aer Lingus Airbus A321XLR
Last week saw a flutter of news around the A321XLR. This was driven Patrick Quayle, United’s senior vice president of global network planning and alliances, told The Air Current that the range originally presented by Airbus was “a lot further than what it is right now, as constructed and as built.” This should not be a surprise. We have covered this issue at Air Canada and Wizz.
Initially we were quite taken with this aircraft, but started to question whether it can do as much as Airbus claims. The payload/range claimed was to be better than what the Boeing 757-200 offered. The A321XLR generally offers longer range than the 757-200 at comparable (or slightly lower) payloads, with much better fuel efficiency, though the 757 retains some advantages in maximum structural payload and short-field performance.
