Boeing’s Deal to Lose: American’s Widebody Decision

Reports state American Airlines' widebody decision has narrowed to two aircraft: the Airbus A330-900neo and the Boeing 787-10, to replace the airline's 47 Boeing 777-200ERs starting in the 2030s. Chief Commercial Officer Nat Pieper called the process the "seventh or eighth inning," saying the outcome "could go either way." We compared the A330-900 against the 787-9 in detail last year. This decision calls for a different comparison — the -10 is a materially different aircraft from the -9, and the trade-offs shift as a result. However, the A330-900's consideration for this competition speaks volumes. On the other hand, American can be playing the usual trade-off game airlines do to ensure the sharpest pricing. The A350 is probably too large compared to the 777-200ER to be considered. We previously published an analysis stating that the deal favors Boeing. Let's go over the various trade-offs using the available data. The Trade-Offs Range Flips in Airbus's Favor The standard 787-vs-A330neo story is Boeing wins on range, particularly at full payload on long, thin routes — that's for a 787-9 comparison. It doesn't carry over so cleanly to the -10. Stretching the 787 fuselage for extra capacity costs range: the 787-10 is rated at roughly 6,400 nautical miles, against the A330-900neo's roughly 7,200 nautical miles at its 251-tonne MTOW variant. If that gap holds up, this is a real reversal — Airbus likely has the range advantage in this specific match up, not Boeing. Important note: Boeing does offer the HGW versions, and all 787-9 and 787-10 built from December 2025 onward are structurally capable of the higher weight. Airlines can activate it at delivery or later (it affects airport fees). A 787-10 HGW offers ~400 more miles of range. Fuel Burn — The Perennial Exogenous Factor We're sharing our fuel-efficiency index KPI here because it bears directly on the choice American must weigh between the A330-900 and 787-10 as 777-200 replacements. The Fuel Efficiency Index is a composite metric built from four DOT T-2 traffic and capacity fields, normalized against fleet-wide baselines and combined into a single score. The core problem: no single metric tells the whole story. ASM/Gallon measures raw seating capacity but says nothing about whether those seats sell. RPM/Gallon captures passenger volume but ignores freight. RTM/Gallon adds revenue cargo weight to the picture but still misses unsold capacity. ATM/Gallon captures total potential lift but ignores whether that lift gets used. These four collapse into two real dimensions, not four independent ones. ASM and ATM both track capacity — how efficiently the airframe burns fuel per unit of space offered, regardless of demand. RPM and RTM both track realized traffic — how efficiently fuel converts into revenue-generating output once passengers and cargo are loaded on. The index weights these two dimensions equally: first, a geometric mean of the capacity pair and the traffic pair, then a geometric mean of those two results. Equal weighting means the index doesn't reward an aircraft for looking efficient on paper if that efficiency doesn't show up in what actually flies — and it doesn't reward a plane that only looks good once it's full, either. Each ratio is normalized to its fleet-wide average for the year, so a score of 1.00 indicates average performance; scores above 1.00 are better than average, and below 1.00 are worse. On this measure, the 787-10 comes out ahead of the A330-900 across every year in our dataset — not by a small margin. That's one input among several American will weigh, and it says nothing about acquisition cost, cabin economics, or delivery timing. But if fuel burn is the exogenous factor airlines can least control and most want to minimize, this is where the two candidates actually separate. Capacity Is Close and Configuration-Dependent In typical airline layouts, the 787-10 seats more than the A330-900. At maximum density, the gap narrows considerably, with both aircraft capable of accommodating more than 400 seats in a single-class configuration. American's actual configuration choice, once known, will matter more than either aircraft's theoretical maximum. As guides to a four-class LOPA, Delta's A330-900s seat 281 and United's equivalent 787-10s seat 318. American's LOPA will be competitive with these at ~300. We expect American to follow a premium-heavy LOPA, now becoming more popular. Cost and Delivery Timing Favor Airbus — and This Connects to the Whole Year Lease rates for the A330-900neo have historically run meaningfully below a high-demand 787-9, and Airbus's comparatively slower A330neo sales meant more available near-term delivery slots — Delta already took advantage of this once, swapping A350 positions for A330-900neos to get capacity sooner. This is worth placing directly against everything we've covered this year: Rate 75, the North Line, GKN's window shortage, GE Aerospace's own admission of parts-delinquency constraints. Boeing's 787 line has been sold out for years. If Airbus can meaningfully offer faster delivery on the A330neo, that's not a marginal factor in American's decision — it's the same production-scarcity dynamic that's shaped nearly every OEM story this year, showing up directly in the airline's fleet choice. Bear in mind that American retired its A330 fleet during the pandemic, including 15 relatively young A330-200s, a decision that multiple sources are calling a self-inflicted wound, given that American is reportedly reconsidering the same aircraft family. United and Delta were both able to exploit the recovery in international travel much faster than American after the pandemic. That loss of momentum has pushed American into a trailing #3 slot. Our current 2026 delivery tracking shows Airbus at 41.6 days for widebody deliveries (after first flight) and Boeing 787s at 192.8 days. That delta surely plays into the decision, and it heavily favors Airbus. Even with Airbus'A330 deliveries running slower than they are happy with. Fleet Commonality Is the Cost Analysts Keep Under weighting American operates roughly 70 787s today. Choosing the 787-10 extends the existing pilot pool, maintenance infrastructure, and spare parts inventory. Choosing the A330neo means rebuilding an Airbus widebody ecosystem from zero — six years after American deliberately dismantled it. That rebuild isn't just symbolic: it requires new simulator infrastructure and a separate type-rating pipeline for American's pilots, a real and quantifiable switching cost that a simple lease-rate or list-price comparison won't capture. The chatter is for up to 65 aircraft. Given a typical ratio of 14 pilots/aircraft, this selection impacts over 900 pilots. Crew training is a hurdle that Airbus will try to offset creatively. And it can use the growing group of Airbus pilots operating the A321s at American as its cornerstone. Airbus' common flight deck offers fast training to switch from any model (except A220). What should be a material disadvantage for Airbus might be more easily overcome than many expect. One Wrinkle Worth Naming and Setting Aside This week's separate FAA/EASA directive ordering airlines to de-pair certain Rolls-Royce Trent engines on older A330s and 777s, over concerns about dual in-flight shutdowns, landed in the same news cycle as this decision. That directive applies to older Trent variants — not the Trent 7000 that powers the A330neo, but it does impact American's 777-200ERs that use this engine. The two stories are unrelated, and it would be a mistake for a reader to conflate "Rolls-Royce Trent safety directive" with "American considers a Trent-powered aircraft" as if they were connected. They aren't, but the coincidence is close enough to warrant addressing directly rather than leaving a skeptical reader to wonder. Bottom Line The factors in this decision sometimes point in different directions. Range and delivery timing plausibly favor Airbus. Commonality and switching cost favor Boeing. Capacity is close enough not to matter much either way. Fuel efficiency points to Boeing. That's likely exactly why Pieper is calling this a late-innings, could-go-either-way decision rather than a foregone conclusion — the trade offs are close enough that American's final answer will say as much about how the airline weights delivery certainty against fleet simplicity as it will about either aircraft's underlying specifications.
