Airbus A350F Completes Successful First Flight

Airbus successfully completed the first flight of the A350F freighter earlier today. The flight from Toulouse spent 4 hours and 10 minutes in the air, reaching an altitude of 25,000 feet during the flight. The flight, as tracked by Flight Radar, is shown in the following screen shot. "This maiden flight is a major milestone for the A350F and for our customers worldwide. As the latest development of our highly successful A350 platform, the A350F is a true game-changer for the air cargo market, combining unmatched operational flexibility, fuel efficiency, and range," stated Lars Wagner, CEO Commercial Aircraft at Airbus. “I am immensely proud of the extraordinary dedication and hard work of all the teams who have made this achievement possible.” The aircraft was flown by Captain & Test Pilot Bernardo Saez-Benito, First Officer and Experimental Test Pilot Sylvain Guiraud, together with Test Flight Engineer Ludovic Girard. In addition, Lead Flight Test Engineers Laurent Bussiere and Jaime Angoloti were onboard. The A350F Program The A350F is Airbus latest attempt to break Boeing’s strangle hold on the freighter market, where 9 out of 10 freighters are Boeing aircraft. The new factory built A350F is the first freighter with a composite fuselage and wing, offering a lighter structure that provides more payload and range vis-à-vis prior generation derivatives. The A350F, based on the A350-1000 passenger version of the A350, can accommodate 30 main-deck pallets and a payload of 111 tonnes over a range of 4,700 nautical miles. The A350F also has the largest cargo door in the industry, measuring 175 inches at the edges and a clear opening of 169.5 inches, or just over 14 feet. The ease in loading and a unique floor design that optimizes flexible pallet loading enables better center-of-gravity management and maximizing cargo capacity. The aircraft can fly the most flown cargo route in the world, Hong Kong to Anchorage, at full payload. MRO activities for airlines operating the A350 passenger version will be quite similar, with 99% of airframe parts and 100% of engine parts the same between the models. The A350F has very high commonality with passenger versions. The A350F already meets the 2027 ICAO CO2 emission standards, and will enter service with the ability to operate on 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (“SAF”). Boeing was recently granted a waiver from the FAA to continue 777F sales despite not meeting those emission standards, as Boeing currently lacks a freighter meeting those standards until the 777-8F is certified. Competitive Comparison The major competitor for the A350F will be the future Boeing 777-8F, a part of Boeing’s 777-X redesign of the 777 program, as well as the current 777F. Comparing the two newest aircraft reflects the difference between a composite aircraft and traditional construction, as shown in the table below. AirInsight Analysis The Maximum Take-Off Weight (“MTOW”) for the 777-8F is 805,300 pounds versus 703,275 for the A350F. Interestingly, the payload for the A350F is slightly higher than that of the 777-8F, at 111 versus 110 tonnes. With the same payload and a 14.5% lighter weight, the A350F will be the fuel-efficient choice in the competition. The 777-8F will require engines with 134,300 pounds of thrust compared with only 97,000 pounds for the A350F, providing a major differential in fuel efficiency. The A350F will set new efficiency standards for the freighter market. Powered by the latest Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97 engines, the aircraft will bring a reduction in fuel consumption and carbon emissions of up to 40% compared to competitor aircraft with a similar payload-range capability. It is the first new freighter to fully meet the latest ICAO's CO? emission standards. At the end of August 2026, the A350F had already recorded 115 orders from 14 disclosed customers and it had captured up to 59% market share in the large freighter category. As the first composite fuselage aircraft in the freighter market, Airbus recognizes the potential for dings and dents to the composite fuselage and wings. Automated and portable non-destructive testing tools will be available to ensure that any ramp-rash can be quickly addressed in both normal cargo operations as well as scheduled MRO events. The Bottom Line Airbus has developed a very efficient freighter aircraft the competes well against the forthcoming model from the incumbent market leader, Boeing. The operating economics of the A350F should provide A350F customers a significant advantage. The question now is whether Airbus can gain orders from the large operators, DHL, FedEx, UPS, Atlas Air, and Amazon. If Airbus can sign one or more of these large customers, it will gain a significant foothold in the freighter market and compete well with Boeing. That would break the 90 percent market share strangle-hold Boeing has in the freighter market and re-introduce competition. With a successful first flight and a 400 flight hour test program, certification is expected next year with first deliveries following shortly thereafter.
