News broke this morning that EASA has alerted operators of the A321neo regarding the potential for an “excessive pitch” anomaly. Airbus has introduced a temporary revision to the A321neo flight manuals that would prevent the aircraft from reaching excessive pitch altitudes. This revision follows analysis of the elevator and aileron computer on the A321neo.
This is similar in nature to the problems that led to the MCAS system being installed at Boeing. Airbus, with existing fly-by-wire system that are more extensive than those on the 737MAX, can remain in safe operation following the new procedure. Whether a software modification will be needed for the A321neo remains to be seen at this juncture.
