‘A321XLR Is ‘Compelling’ Aircraft For Africa’

The Airbus A321XLR is the ideal aircraft to open up long-range, thin markets that have been underserved so far to and within Sub-Saharan Africa, Airbus says. A few airlines have already planned to operate the type into Africa, which could change the dynamics in the market. Airbus released the third edition of its Unserved Air Routes study today at a conference in Gabarone (Botswana). Previous editions were done in 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 and looked at origin and destination traffic for 16 city pairs. The top 10 with unserved routes from Sub-Saharan Africa to other continents is led for the third time by Harare-London, ahead of Johannesburg-Mumbai and Dubai-Kinshasa. Within Africa, the top 3 with unserved routes to the Sub-Saharan region consist of Cape Town-Lagos, Dakar-Libreville, and Abuja-Nairobi. Harare-London attracted 107.000 passengers between October 2024 and September 2025, slightly down from the 111.000 in the previous year. Until 2023, Emirates and Qatar Airways captured most of the traffic with a transit in Dubai and Doha. This changed when Ethiopian Airlines launched services between Addis Ababa and London Gatwick, the preferred airport of Zimbabweans. It now carries just over 50.000 passengers who have their origin of destination in Harare. RwandAir, together with its partner Qatar Airways, has also grown its market share. [caption id="attachment_193017" align="aligncenter" width="674"] Top 10 unserved routes Sub-Saharan Africa[/caption] According to Airbus, this demand justifies a non-stop service, for which an A330 widebody would be best-suited. “While a non-stop service represents the natural evolution for this route, especially during the periods of peak demand, its long-term viability will depend on achieving and sustaining a consistent frequency. Given the corridor's price-sensitive nature, the challenge for any operator lies in balancing the right product with a competitive fare structure, especially as strategic airport alignment remains a key driver of market preference.” Johannesburg-Mumbai Johannesburg-Mumbai is second on the list of unserved routes. Pre-COVID, some 119.000 passengers flew between the two cities with a transit in Addis Ababa, Nairobi, or Doha. Further back, South African Airways and India’s Jet Airways operated a direct service. Since 2022, passenger numbers have been static at around 87.000 per year. Air Tanzania already operates Mumbai-Dar es Salaam and Dar es Salaam-Johannesburg with the A220-300 and captured seven percent market share on the latter route. But this option is sub-optimal. The A321XLR would fit in perfectly to make this a non-stop route. "The Airbus A321XLR, customised with a cabin layout tailored to this specific traffic profile, presents a compelling solution by combining long-range capabilities and advanced cabin comfort with single-aisle operating costs. Nonetheless, the challenging take-off conditions at Johannesburg on the eastbound leg to Mumbai pose a technical hurdle, meaning airlines and airports must look toward creative routing solutions.” Adding Durban with its large Indian community could solve the restrictions at Johannesburg and has the potential to attract more customers. Kinshasa-Dubai Kinshasa-Dubai rounds off the top 3 of unserved routes, despite attracting 74.000 passengers each year. The route has grown by 14.3 percent per year since 2019, despite the pandemic. Again, Ethiopian Airlines has benefited the most from transit passengers, with Air Tanzania in the runner-up position via Dar es Salaam. Airbus thinks that the route is strong enough to be served by an A350-900 from Emirates, which also adds cargo capacity. Etihad has already announced a three-times weekly direct service between Abu Dhabi and Kinshasa from March 2027, but hasn’t identified if that will be by A321LR or a widebody. [caption id="attachment_193011" align="aligncenter" width="723"] Airbus A220-100/A321XLR range from Lagos[/caption] According to Airbus, the A321XLR “presents a compelling single-aisle option, providing the necessary range and allowing for a rapid build-up of flight frequencies without introducing vast capacity. Premium traffic, which averages around 10 percent of the total O&D traffic on the city pair, is typically attracted by high-frequency operations, thereby enhancing the route's lucrativeness and significantly improving Central Africa's accessibility. To address the route's inherent demand volatility, as illustrated in the graph below, an alternating operation utilising aircraft types such as the A321XLR, A330neo, or A350 could be worth evaluating.” On other unserved routes in the top 10-listing, most would be served best by widebodies, but Cape Town-Lagos is another potential XLR route again. Airbus notes that Saudia has plans to operate the XLR to Sub-Saharan Africa as it takes delivery of more aircraft. It also identifies IndiGo as a likely operator of the type into Africa. Air Seychelles also has plans for the XLR: “Air Seychelles has received Cabinet approval for its international long-haul fleet strategy. The airline envisions the lease of two A321XLR aircraft, a move designed to drive a tailored long-haul network expansion with highly optimised capacity.” But be aware, this is an Airbus study, focusing on its own products. As this week’s commitment from Uganda Airlines to Boeing demonstrates, airlines make their own evaluations and decisions about the preferred aircraft.
