Air India orders 100 Airbus, affirming India’s rise |

On Monday, Air India confirmed that it ordered 100 more Airbus aircraft, comprising 10 A350 and 90 A320 family aircraft, including A321neo. These 100 new aircraft are in addition to the firm orders for 470 aircraft that Air India had placed with Airbus and Boeing last year. Last year, Air India ordered 250 aircraft from Airbus, including 40 A350 and 210 A320 family aircraft. This order has now reached 350 aircraft. Besides Air India’s order, IndiGo placed an order for 550 Airbus aircraft at the Paris air show last year (India’s IndiGo places record order for 500 A320 Family aircraft | Airbus). The airline followed with a firm order for 30 Airbus A 350-900 aircraft in April this year. Akasa, which started operations in August 2022, also placed an order for 150 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft in January this year, which include 737 MAX 10 and 737 MAX 8-200 jets, which will provide the airline a steady aircraft delivery stream through 2032, cementing the company’s domestic and international expansion plans, the airline said in a statement announcing the signing of the Boeing order (Akasa Air announces its three-digit aircraft order of 150 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft at WINGS India 2024). Air India also announced that it selected Airbus’ Flight Hour Services-Component (FHS-C) to support the maintenance requirements of its growing A350 fleet. The new material and maintenance contract will help Air India optimize the reliability and performance of its A350 fleet with comprehensive engineering services and integrated component services, including on-site stock at Delhi provided by Airbus. “With India’s passenger growth outpacing the rest of the world, its significantly improving infrastructure and an aspirational young population increasingly going global, we see a clear case for Air India to expand its future fleet beyond the firm orders of the 470 aircraft placed last year. These additional 100 Airbus aircraft will help to position Air India on the path to greater growth and contribute to our mission of building Air India into a world-class airline that connects India to every corner of the world,” said Natarajan Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons and Air India after today’s order became public. In 2023, Air India also placed orders for 220 widebody and narrowbody aircraft with Boeing, of which 185 aircraft remain to be delivered. Air India is the first Indian airline to operate the Airbus A350, powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines. The A350s deliver fuel efficiency, passenger comfort, and long-range capabilities and offer an all-new Air India flying experience to travelers from Delhi to London and New York nonstop. The A320 family fleet, powered by CFM LEAP 1-A engines, is the backbone of Air India’s domestic and short-haul operations.
