American Airlines

The Boeing 737-800 is the main workhorse among US airlines.  There are, by recent count, as of July, 784 in service with US airlines. The next largest fleet among these airlines is the E175 at 717.  The nearest Airbus is the A321 at 429.

How the 737-800 performs guides us to how the industry performs.  If that model experiences an operational hiccup, schedule disruptions could be catastrophic.  With that background, here’s some information that guides you to what we have uncovered.  American Airlines operates 303 of these aircraft, by far the largest US operator.  The next biggest is Southwest at 190.  What this tells you is that American is the most vulnerable to anything going wrong with this model. And that’s what makes this interesting: the 737-800 has proven remarkably reliable. American’s exposure here isn’t a reliability story at all.
