ANA Buys More Embraers In Strategy Update |

All Nippon Airways has placed a follow-up order with Embraer for eight E190-E2s, which will be operated on an ACMI contract by IBEX from 2028. The order was approved by ANA’s Board meeting on Wednesday. ANA confirmed its first E2-order for 20 E190-E2s plus five options at last year’s Paris Airshow. Deliveries of these aircraft will start in 2027. The new batch of eight aircraft is a confirmed order, the airline says in a media release. "This additional E190-E2 order accelerates our efforts to build a sustainable regional aviation network in Japan," President and CEO Koji Shibata is quoted in the release. [caption id="attachment_196494" align="aligncenter" width="612"] E2 ANA[/caption] The Embraer order fits a comprehensive business partnership that ANA has signed with IBEX Airlines. The two companies are expanding their existing partnership to include ACMI/wet-lease operations on domestic, regional routes in Japan from Financial Year 2029, which starts in April 2028. Supply and demand This follows a report from the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism from May, which identified the need for more ACMI agreements within the Japanese aviation system to balance supply and demand. ANA established an expert team that looked at the long-term strategy for regional and domestic operations. The team advised optimising the schedule and implementing capacity adjustments in the short term, building on the 2024 decision to introduce 100-seat regional Embraer aircraft to the fleet. A further evaluation of the strategy has resulted in the agreement with EBIX Airlines, which should contribute to a stable earnings base and an enhanced regional airline network. In its Q1 FY26 results presentation, ANA already identified strong demand for domestic travel, notably for leisure. Traffic was stimulated through special fares and offering a differentiated fare structure since May. Passenger numbers were up by 3.9 percent to 10.6 million. Revenues grew 1.1 percent to ¥163.6 billion. Unit costs were down by 2.7 percent. The carrier introduced a fuel surcharge to offset the effects of high fuel costs. ANA wants to capture more domestic traffic in Q2 by benefiting from early bookings and refining yield management, although traffic dropped in June. IBEX strategy IBEX is not a new partner to ANA. It was established in 2004 and operates a fleet of nine Mitsubishi/Bombardier CRJ700s, all on behalf of ANA Connection. IBEX's main hub is in Sendai, with a basis in Nagoya. The CRJs are on average 12.3 years old and will reach 15 years when the Embraers come into the fleet. In a strategy update released today, the airline says that it will start retiring the CRJs from 2029. IBEX will also change its business model, it says in the strategy update. “Starting with the fleet renewal, we will comprehensively review our production and sales systems and transition to a new business operation model. We will position operations as the source of competitiveness and concentrate management resources on strengthening our functions as an operating carrier. As an operating carrier that handles operations beyond brand boundaries, we will evolve and expand into a B2B business centred on operations, including outsourcing of operational management and future wet leasing businesses. This will create a new revenue base that leverages operations themselves as a strength.” The strategy also says: “Towards the 2030s, we will enhance our presence in the 100-seat class operation domain and establish a regional airline model where operations are the source of competitiveness.” ANA reported a ¥19.4 billion net profit for Q1, which ran until June 30, compared to ¥22.9 billion last year. Operating revenues were up by over 124 percent to ¥672.7 billion, but operating expenses grew even more by 140 percent to ¥651.9 billion.
