Aviation’s Two-Speed Risk Market

Two aviation risk markets repriced this month, and neither one made headlines the way an OEM delivery miss does. The Insurance Side Aerospace underwriters are tightening. WTW's 2Q renewal outlook has hull and liability increases running around 10% for clean risks, with steeper numbers for anything distressed. The risk driver is real: 2025 delivered the American Airlines crash in January, the Air India accident in June, a UPS freighter loss in November, on top of Jeju Air the year before. Reinsurers went into 2026 pushing for a hard reset. They didn't fully get it; direct insurers negotiated excess-of-loss renewals down to low single-digit increases. But the pressure is still building underneath, and Middle East hull-war coverage has already seen triple-digit increases in isolated pockets. Capacity hasn't left the market. That's the part underwriters keep repeating, almost defensively. What's changed is discipline — insurers are pricing by account now, not by class, and long-term agreements that used to lock flat premiums for two years are quietly losing that guarantee in year two. Interestingly, lessors have always priced this way — lease rates are set per aircraft/per lessee based on the airline's credit profile, the specific asset's age and desirability, jurisdiction and repossession risk, and how thin the current fleet plan looks. Identical aircraft going to two different airlines are priced differently, with different lease rates, because the lessor prices the counterparty, not the aircraft class. That's account-level underwriting, and it's been standard lessor practice for a long time — it's a big part of why AerCap, Avolon, and the rest can talk about "portfolio discipline" rather than one blanket rate card. What WTW is describing is aviation insurers moving toward that same logic, which is actually notable because insurance has historically worked more like a class-rated product — the whole airline book gets a broad hull/liability rate based on aggregate industry loss experience, with long-term agreements locking in flat pricing across the portfolio for two years regardless of which specific airline or route is riskier that year. That's the opposite of how a lessor thinks. So the shift WTW is flagging is insurers catching up to lessor-style underwriting discipline — differentiating good accounts from bad ones, rather than spreading risk evenly across the class and letting the LTA smooth it out. It's a meaningful structural move for insurance specifically, even though it's unremarkable behavior for a lessor. The Debt Side AIP Capital priced its first aircraft lease ABS this month — $643 million, in three tranches, backed by 17 narrowbody aircraft (a mix of MAX 8s, A320/321s, one A321neo) plus a single 787-9. The structure: Class A notes carry 26% credit enhancement and a 74% loan-to-value ratio; Class C runs 13% enhancement at 87% LTV. Anticipated repayment in 2033, legal final maturity out to 2051. Nothing about that structure looks stressed. It's a standard, conservative aircraft ABS — the kind of deal that gets done when investors are comfortable, not when they're nervous. A lessor's own credit getting upgraded while insurers are tightening is a pointed contrast. Maples Group's 2026 trends note: credit enhancement levels have "stabilised around pre-pandemic norms" for investment-grade deals, and newer fuel-efficient aircraft (A320neo, 787) are commanding tighter spreads on their "environmental credentials." Older narrowbody paper is the one place showing stress, tied to accelerating retirements — not tied to the geopolitical/claims risk driving insurance. KBRA's January research on the loan-vs-lease ABS distinction shows the entire aviation structured-debt sector growing steadily ($4.8B in cumulative loan ABS alone through 2025), with no sign of investors demanding wider protection against macro risk. So this isn't AIP Capital in isolation — it's a pattern across FTAI, Global Jet Capital, Griffin, and Avolon's own rating. The debt side of aviation capital is uniformly calm-to-improving in 2026, while the insurance side is uniformly hardening. Same Risk, Different Pricing The insurance market is pricing aviation risk as elevated and rising. The debt market, pricing the exact same aircraft, the exact same airlines, the exact same geopolitical backdrop, is pricing it as manageable — protected by structure, but manageable. That's not necessarily a contradiction. Insurers are on the hook for tail risk — a hull loss, a liability judgment, a war-risk event. ABS investors are protected by over-collateralization and seniority; a single aircraft loss or a single distressed lessee doesn't touch a Class A noteholder the way it touches an underwriter's book. Different capital, different exposure, different math. But two markets that are reading the same underlying risk are sending opposite signals. One is hardening and the other cleared a routine deal at routine terms. If the claims environment WTW is describing keeps building — and IUAI's own 2026 survey has geopolitical instability topping the industry's threat list for the first time since the survey started — the debt market's comfort level is the one more likely to move, not the other way around. It's important to watch whether the next aircraft ABS to price shows any sign of that catching up, or whether structured aviation debt just keeps running on a different clock than the people writing the hull policies.
