The United States Patent and Trademark Office has now accepted all 47 claims filed as patents by deltaBurn. Forty seven claims filed, forty seven issued.
The technology involves flow modifiers/vortex inducers on blades to avoid or mitigate normal shocks on transonic sections, improve lift/drag characteristics, and enhance overall disk efficiency without increasing power input. Testing has included flight demos (e.g., 737 Classic/CFM56-related work, business jets) and ground runs (e.g., LF507 turbofan). The company is pursuing Supplemental Type Certificates (STCs), starting with turboprops (e.g., targeting Swearingen Merlin or similar, with FAA noting aspects as potentially minor modifications) before expanding to turbofans. Entities include Singapore registration with US (Phoenix/Deer Valley, AZ) and UK presence for certification work. Founders/key people linked include Peter Ireland (long-time aerodynamics work) and Sander de Moor.

Timing is Everything
At the time we first heard about this, we were skeptical. And we weren’t alone. The early test numbers exceeded expectations significantly. Industry consensus at the time was they were too good to be true.
It turns out they were not too good to be true.
The timing on the news of these patents is exquisite. The duopoly can’t deliver on time. Aircraft operators want to retire are being brought back online. But in doing so, most attention has been on cabin refurbishment. It turns out that deltaBurn now offers a solution to update the engines, too.
The ability to tweak an existing engine to generate the improved thrust and lower fuel burn at the levels deltaBurn offers is an irresistible combination in today’s market.
Operators don’t need to wait for that new delivery and eat the costs. They can deploy the deltaBurn solution now, win the benefits now and operate better than before. There’s no need to engage in the feeding frenzy order book stretching mid-2030’s. And the pricing that entails.
This solution really looks that disruptive. Now that the patents have been awarded the industry skeptics should consider re-engaging to see how they deploy the technology and exploit its benefits.
