Two eVTOL deals landed within days of each other this month. Archer Aviation is acquiring Boeing’s Wisk Aero, along with Insitu and SkyGrid, with Boeing taking a 19.75% equity stake in Archer as part of the transaction. Joby Aviation is acquiring Resonant Sciences for $500 million to scale its own defense business.
Different structures, sending the same underlying signal: the eVTOL field that looked like a wide-west race two years ago is starting to sort itself into winners, absorbed also-rans, and companies that stop existing.
This isn’t a new pattern showing up for the first time. It’s an old pattern finally reaching the companies everyone assumed were safe. The eVTOL business is going through it’s 1930’s-phase.
