The Performance Index Methodology We track US origin airports using our Station Performance Index, which scores stations on a normalized scale from 0 to 100: A score closer to 100 indicates an efficient station running with minimal delays and very low disruption frequencies. A score closer to 0 points to severe operational distress, characterized by heavy average departure delays (25+ minutes) and high disruption rates (35%+). The index is built on two core factors weighted equally (50/50): Departure Delay Performance (50% weight): Bench marked from 5 minutes (best case / score of 1) to 25 minutes (worst case / score of 0). Disruption Rate Performance (50% weight): Bench marked from 10% (best case / score of 1) to 35% (worst case / score of 0). The Decliners: Conversely, stations like SFO's comparative volatility on certain metrics or drops at stations like ATL (-2.15) and DEN (-1.94) show localized regression. The Macro Net Change: The bottom Total row sits essentially flat at -0.10. This indicates that across the top 20 origin network, overall performance remains steady year-over-year as individual station gains balance out localized degradations. The Transition Zones: Stations like BNA, MIA, MCO, and SFO occupy mixed territory, balancing acceptable delay windows against elevated disruption frequencies. Network Implications & Hub Economics This operational clustering carries heavy consequences for hub network integrity, schedule reliability, and airline cost structures. 1. High-Friction Hubs & Affected Carriers DFW and ORD (American Airlines): Operating deep in the high-friction red zone with delay averages crossing 21–22 minutes and disruption rates touching 30%+. Because American relies heavily on complex wave banking at these mega-hubs, these bottlenecks trigger cascading reactionary delays, broken connections, and ballooning crew-cost inefficiencies—forcing network architects to de-peak schedules and pad block times.
