Indian aerospace suppliers strengthen ties with Airbus and Boeing

Mahindra Aerostructures Pvt Ltd (MASPL) and Airbus Aerostructures GmbH have signed a new contract for the manufacture and delivery of metallic components for all Airbus commercial aircraft models, including the company’s best-selling A320 family. MASPL has been a direct supplier to the Airbus Group since 2015. Airbus shares a long-standing relationship of collaboration and symbiotic growth with India. For more than 50 years, it has been providing technology and know-how, helping in the growth of India’s civil aviation sector. It has also supported the modernization of India’s armed forces. Under the latest contract, MASPL will supply close to 5.000 varieties of metallic components to Airbus Aerostructures in Germany from its manufacturing base in India. The contract adds to the existing MASPL programs to deliver parts directly to Airbus at its facilities in Toulouse. Commenting on the development, Mr. Arvind Mehra, Managing Director & CEO of Mahindra Aerostructures said that the award was a significant expansion of its Airbus portfolio and offered further opportunities for Mahindra Aerostructures to work with Airbus on performance, sustainability, and operational excellence. The latest development takes another step in Airbus partnering with Indian aircraft manufacturing companies. In November last year, Aequs, an aerospace component maker company based in Belgaum in South India announced that it had signed a contract with Airbus for the supply of components for its single-aisle family of aircraft, the Airbus A320neo family as well as the A330neo and A350 widebodies over a 10-year period. Mahindra’s contract with Airbus will further expand the growing footprint that Indian companies have in the aircraft and helicopters that are produced by Airbus and Boeing. In 2021, Rémi Maillard, President and Managing Director of Airbus India and South Asia, told Moneycontrol that every commercial aircraft or helicopter that Airbus manufactured had parts, design, or technology from India. “We not only support 7.000 jobs but are also constantly increasing India’s contribution to our global products through procurement of both components and services from more than 45 Indian suppliers,” Maillard said. At an Airbus facility in Bengaluru, Indian engineers are also contributing to the development of the next-generation zero-emission aircraft. Boeing is also a major customer However, Indian companies are equally involved with Boeing. In July last year, Salil Gupte, President of Boeing India, told leading Indian daily Times of India that Boeing will ramp up its sourcing from the current $1 billion annually. He added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the US had “Certainly laid the groundwork for engine manufacturing in the country.” Gupte added: “Of (the) close to 4.000 employees in India today, the 3.000-strong engineering workforce at the Boeing India Engineering & Technology Centers (BIETC) in Bengaluru and Chennai contributes to global aerospace growth by delivering cutting-edge R&D, innovation, and high-quality engineering work for Boeing's defence, space, and commercial businesses in India for India, and for the world.” Boeing’s association with India can be traced back to 1923 when as part of Douglas Aircraft Company’s (now Boeing) historic flight around the world, three Douglas World cruisers reached Calcutta (now Kolkata). Later, in 1991 Hindustan Aeronautics Limited became a single-source producer of Boeing 757 over-wing exit doors.
