Lufthansa will add the Airbus A350-1000 to its fleet, having ordered ten of them as part of a follow-on widebody order for 22 aircraft. The airline’s Supervisory Board today approved the purchase of the stretched A350, together with five more A350-900s, and seven Boeing 787-9s. And they are not just for the parent airline. The main reason for the new order is twofold. First, Lufthansa is short of capacity as demand for long-haul is recovering stronger than was anticipated. As a stop-gap, the airline is bringing back ten Airbus
A340-600s and four A380s out of storage for the 2023 summer season. It isn’t ruled out that four more A380s will be added.
These aircraft are all quads. Together, with its older twins like the Boeing 777-200 and 767-300ER at Austrian, the A340-300 and A340-600 at Lufthansa and SWISS, and the A330-200 with Eurowings Discover, Lufthansa could do with newer-generation aircraft if it wants to meet is carbon emission reduction targets by 2030.
