Lufthansa will add the Airbus A350-1000 to its fleet, having ordered ten of them as part of a follow-on widebody order for 22 aircraft. The airline’s Supervisory Board today approved the purchase of the stretched A350, together with five more A350-900s, and seven Boeing 787-9s. And they are not just for the parent airline. More widebody orders could be announced soon. Insight: the logic behind Lufthansa’s widebody order.

The main reason for the new order is twofold. First, Lufthansa is short of capacity as demand for long-haul is recovering stronger than was anticipated. As a stop-gap, the airline is bringing back ten Airbus A340-600s and four A380s out of storage for the 2023 summer season. It isn’t ruled out that four more A380s will be added.
