Azul and LHColus Tecnologia have developed the first Embraer E190 Class-F Freighter in the world. Azul's new freighter In previous conference calls and events, Azul's management has talked greatly about the plans to improve the company's freighter segment. While Azul moves forward with its fleet renewal plan (receiving next-gen aircraft like the E2), the airline is not quite ready to retire its E1 fleet. On the contrary, Azul aims to use the E1 in a very different way. Last year, Abhi Shah, Azul’s CRO, explained, “We are reformulating our E1s, and we have an opportunity to do what we did with passengers 13 years ago. What we are doing is removing all the seats, and we are putting fire bag containers on the aircraft, doubling the payload. We are using the E1 trip cost. Azul grew using the E1’s trip cost; that’s how we built our hubs in Confins and Recife. And now, using the E1 trip cost, we can fly to secondary cities and provide dedicated e-commerce delivery services.” Next year, Azul will use four E1 freighters starting in January, added Shah. Introducing Azul's new freighter Azul and LHColus Tecnologia developed a new Embraer Class-F Freighter. “Class F” category means that the aircraft is certified to transport cargo in the cabin in heat and fire-resistant containers with an innovative thermal camera fire detection system. Both companies worked together on the conceptual design development, cabin preparation, proof of concept, and test flights, finally leading to aircraft certification by ANAC on February 1 this year. Adding this fleet type to Azul Cargo’s operation adds unmatched flexibility and cost-effectiveness to its logistics operation. This innovation expands the cargo capacity of the Embraer E195 (“E1”) from 7 to 15 tons, significantly leveraging its low trip cost to help Azul Cargo transform logistics in Brazil. This also reinforces Azul’s commitment to the environment, as this gain in efficiency is equivalent to a reduction of 7,900 tons of carbon emitted per aircraft per year. Abhi Shah added, “Azul has helped to double the size of the Brazilian aviation market over the last thirteen years. A key driver of that growth was the E1. Today with the launch of the world’s first Embraer Class F freighter, we again aim to transform the Brazilian market, this time in logistics. With unmatched operational flexibility, reliability, and access to varied airport infrastructure, the E1 Class F is the perfect platform to deliver a competitive advantage to our logistics customers." Retiring the E1 from passenger service Azul expects to have a 100% next-gen commercial fleet by 2026, a couple of years later than expected, due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Nonetheless, the airline is sure it will retire or retrofit its E1 fleet. And it is a no-brainer. The E1 and the A320neo burn almost the same amount of fuel per engine, but the A320neo allows Azul to carry 47% more passengers. The E2 reduces by 18% the fuel consumption versus the E1 and allows 15% more seats. Cost per seat reduces by 26% with the E2, 29% with the A320neo, and 34% with the A321neo, compared to the E1.
