US President Donald Trump, rather than the head of the FAA, announced the grounding of the Boeing 737MAX yesterday.  The FAA was quite late to the party, as China led the way being first to ground the aircraft, Europe followed, then Canada and finally the US.

President Trump and Chairman Xi have been the public face of difficult trade negotiations that are on-going between the US and China.  Boeing is a large element in US trade with China, with the largest concentration of the 737MAX is in China.
