O'Hare Airport

Care to share?

Yesterday, your correspondent had the unpleasant experience of changing planes at Chicago O’Hare.  What made this especially unpleasant was that the airport (like all airports) is a perpetual construction site. Consequently, traffic flow is even more constrained, and congestion rises.  That means connection times must be long to allow for the ‘what feels like’ forever taxi times.

But ‘what it feels like’ is not a reliable metric.  Sitting at this ‘window seat’ certainly added to those ‘feels’.

The Data

Using the US DoT’s On-Time data, we developed this model.  There are five pages, with some duplication. Walking around this substantial data cube is easier with the duplication because it saves you from having to scroll back a page to see the metric.

For ease of analysis, we are focused on the Top 25 US airports.  The key items we are showing are time: by flight, by taxi, by destination, and by airline.  Any airport tracking shown with that airport as the origin point, unless you select a route.

Remember to click the double-headed arrow at the bottom right for optimal viewing on your monitor.

  • Page 1: Select Origin and Destination to see how times change over the period.
  • Page 2: Arrival delays for the Top 25, with color coding to highlight the worst offenders.
  • Page 3: Top 25 routes, with performance by airline.
  • Page 4: Top 12 airports taxi times
  • Page 5: Top 12 compared by Taxi time/Flight times and Taxi time/Elapsed times.

The O’Hare ‘Feels’ Check

Turns out, as we see on page 5, that the ‘feels’ were not entirely subjective.  That green line is not going in an attractive direction.  Yes, it seems taking another airline to avoid ORD is a wise choice.  Sorry, American and United, it’s not personal; that’s the data.
