When Capacity Gets Tight, Regional Routes Go First |

United Airlines has abandoned 10 planned regional routes out of Chicago O'Hare — Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, plus a planned Guadalajara service. Alaska Airlines dropped seven routes — three seasonal Puerto Vallarta services, plus smaller California and regional pairs. Two different airlines, two different headlines, in the same week. They're not the same story. But they point at the same underlying truth about how airlines make choices when something constrains them. United's Constraint Is Regulatory The FAA has capped O'Hare at roughly 2,700-2,708 daily operations, citing airport construction and — in the agency's own language — "competitive scheduling dynamics" between United and American, the two carriers fighting hardest for position at that hub. The cap, originally set to expire in October 2026, has now been extended to October 2027. That forced United to scrap 10 planned-but-never-launched regional routes. Here's what the headline "United cuts 10 routes" undersells: United's overall O'Hare schedule this summer is its largest ever, up 11-13% YoY. This isn't retreat. But look closer at where the growth is and isn't happening. Real, already-operating service to smaller markets got frequency cuts too — Albuquerque down to 148 flights from 222 scheduled, Asheville down to 222 from 289, Akron down to 296 from 390 — even as the hub as a whole kept growing. United hit a capacity ceiling, and chose to protect growth on its stronger routes by trimming regional frequency first, not by slowing the airport-wide expansion. Alaska's Constraint Is Aircraft Deliveries This is Alaska's second wave of nearly identical cuts in under a year. In October 2025, it cut seven SFO and LAX routes, citing new aircraft simply not arriving fast enough — VP Kirsten Amrine said: "there's only so many airplanes in the world." Now, a different seven routes are going: three seasonal Puerto Vallarta services and a handful of smaller California and regional pairs. The Puerto Vallarta cuts close a loop worth naming. Back in the spring, Alaska flagged civil unrest in Puerto Vallarta as a real demand headwind heading into its 1Q earnings. Five months later, Alaska isn't just weathering a temporary disruption there — it's permanently dropping three of the routes it tried in that market. A constraint that started as "we don't have enough aircraft" and a market that started as "temporarily disrupted" have converged into the same outcome: regional and secondary leisure routes are what goes. The Same Logic, in the Same Reshuffle Alaska's move is the clearest tell. It isn't just cutting regional routes — it's reinstating San Jose-LAX with a 173-seat 737-900ERs, replacing the 76-seat Embraer E175s. That's not a coincidence sitting next to the cuts. It's the same underlying choice United is making at O'Hare: when capacity is constrained, for whatever reason, protect and grow the larger-gauge, presumably higher-yield flying, and let regional service and smaller aircraft absorb the squeeze first. United hit a regulatory ceiling. Alaska hit a fleet-delivery ceiling. The causes are unrelated — one is an FAA order about airport congestion, the other is Boeing not delivering aircraft on the schedule Alaska planned around. But both airlines reached for the identical lever once the ceiling hit: regional and secondary markets are the pressure valve, every time, regardless of why the pressure exists in the first place. Why This Matters Beyond These Two Airlines This fits a broader industry pattern of upgauging — replacing smaller aircraft with larger ones on the same or similar routes — that's been building for years, not something unique to either carrier this week. What United and Alaska's simultaneous moves add is a demonstration of why that pattern holds up under pressure specifically. It's easy to grow regional service when capacity is abundant. It's the first thing sacrificed the moment capacity gets scarce, whether the scarcity comes from a regulator capping your busiest hub or a manufacturer failing to deliver the jets you already ordered. These two charts offer more evidence. Regional aircraft have lower load factors, and those load factors are softening going into 2026. Regional airlines in the lower chart also show softening load factors. Regional aircraft economics are hit hard when fuel costs rise and traffic softens. The trade off between simply cutting the aircraft or upsizing to chase better economics is straightforward. It acts like a market constraint that ends up being an operational tax not worth paying. If the airline won't pay it, travelers must by driving to an airport further away to catch a larger aircraft. This does not apply to O'Hare or Seattle. But we suggest the Scope Clause ensures that regional service has become the relief valve - when there's a choice, regional service is the easier sacrifice. And we should expect to see more route cuts like this. Bottom Line Regional flying isn't just an easy target when one airline hits one specific problem. It's structurally the first thing every airline reaches for once anything constrains their growth — a regulatory cap, a delivery delay, or, as demonstrated this week, either one, at two unrelated carriers, in the same seven days. The constraint changes. The response doesn't.
