Another Big China Win For Airbus

Air China filed a fresh order with the Shanghai Stock Exchange today: 15 A350-900s and 40 A320neo family jets, placed through its subsidiary Shenzhen Airlines. List value comes to roughly $12.4 billion — though as with every large Chinese order, expect a meaningful undisclosed discount once the ink dries. Fifty-five jets on its own is a solid order. In context, it's more than that. It Started in December This isn't an isolated data point. Since late December, Chinese carriers and lessors have committed to well over 200 A320-family aircraft: Spring Airlines: 30 A320neo Juneyao Airlines: 25 A320neo family China Aircraft Leasing Group (CALC): 30 A320neo Air China (direct): 60 A320neo, $9.53 billion China Express Airlines: 3 A320 Air China / Shenzhen Airlines (today): 40 A320neo, plus 15 A350-900 Boeing hasn't landed a comparable order out of China since 2017. Prolonged US-China trade tensions have done what Airbus' marketing team never could — they've handed Airbus a captive customer base with essentially no domestic alternative to shop against. COMAC has become the Great Delivery Disappointment. This is more than money None of these aircraft will deliver quickly. Air China's own December order is scheduled across 2028–2032. Today's Shenzhen order will land within that same window once batching is confirmed. That's the real story: China isn't buying capacity for next year. It's buying a place in a queue that Airbus admitted is stretched. If China makes this move, know that it must be matched. Not maybe, it must be by lessors and airlines looking for capacity. Recall the thesis from our look at aviation's two-speed risk market: Airbus's own "Rate 75" target for the A320 family — 75/month by 2027 — is already under strain from CFM LEAP-1A engine supply and Spirit AeroSystems integration, not from a lack of final assembly capacity. Every additional order China places doesn't shorten that supply chain. It lengthens the line standing in front of it. Two hundred-plus aircraft in seven months make Airbus' order book healthier and its delivery math harder in the same motion. Those two things are not in tension — they're the same fact, viewed from opposite ends of the balance sheet. The Engine Concentration The engine picture adds another layer. We mentioned CFM above, and here's why this is an important item. By airline: 48% (12 of 25) of Chinese carriers have at least one GTF-powered Airbus neo in their fleet/order book. By aircraft: 31% (289 of 931) of Chinese airlines' neo-family Airbus aircraft are GTF-powered — the rest operate the CFM LEAP. It's concentrated, not evenly spread. Sichuan Airlines is 100% GTF (68/68), and China Southern's small GTF share (25 of 185) is really "China Southern is overwhelmingly LEAP, with a modest GTF pocket." Air China sits in between (52 of 110, ~47%). The 31% headline number is doing a lot of averaging. Shenzhen Airlines operates GTFs on its neo fleet. Will they stay with it or switch to LEAP? Given Shenzhen's GTF track record with Pratt & Whitney (the long-term EngineWise agreement, existing maintenance infrastructure, existing pilot/tech training on the type) and P&W's now-certified GTF Advantage — offering up to 2x time-on-wing versus the current-generation engines that caused the industry-wide grounding/reliability crisis — the higher-probability outcome is Shenzhen sticks with GTF rather than switching. Airlines rarely split-fleet engine types within the same aircraft family unless there's a specific commercial reason (financing incentives, lessor requirements, or a genuine confidence break), and Shenzhen's sister carrier, Air China, has stayed loyal to Pratt & Whitney across its own wide-body and narrow-body fleets. Even so, half the Chinese carriers on Airbus neo are 100% LEAP — Spring, Xiamen, Hainan, Chengdu, Colorful Guizhou, Tibet, Chongqing, Capital, Hunan, GX, Lucky Air, and China West Air all show zero GTF aircraft in this dataset. CFM's LEAP is not without 'issues'. Matching the CFM56's durability record has proven harder than CFM anticipated. It's not only the GTF that has had teething problems. Now take another look at that Airbus backlog and try to factor in the CFM deliveries. Bottom Line Every one of these Chinese orders reads as a win for Airbus, and structurally, it is — landing a near monopoly position in the world's second-largest aviation market while Boeing is politically constrained is exactly the kind of edge OEMs spend decades trying to build. But a win on the order book is not the same as a win on the delivery schedule. If the supply chain constraints already showing up in Airbus's engine and aerostructure sourcing don't ease, China's orders aren't filling near-term capacity — they're extending a backlog that was already pushing into the next decade.
