Comparing the A330-900 to the 787-9 is a study in how the OEMs keep tweaking their aircraft. Airbus Since its 2018 launch, the A330-900 has evolved through incremental updates aimed at boosting performance, efficiency, and passenger experience: The initial MTOW was originally certified at 242 tonnes. After an incremental upgrade, MTOW was raised to 251 tonnes, allowing greater payload or fuel for extended range. Airbus aims to increase MTOW to 253 tonnes by end-2027, translating to an approximate 150 nm range boost and enhanced structural payload. Starting 4Q25, Airbus will introduce the Step 4 package to enhance takeoff performance. This will incorporate Enhanced Take-Off Configurations (ETOC) with four new intermediate flap/slat settings (1B, 2B, 2C, 3B) for smoother lift-to-drag transitions. Faster landing gear and gear door retraction will be implemented, cutting gear retract time by ~0.8 s and door cycle by ~0.2 s, plus an earlier automatic sequence upon engine failure. Airbus officials suggested this could equate to nearly 6.9 t extra payload in some scenarios. Boeing Engine Fixes & Performance Enhancements: Rolls-Royce provided a Trent 1000 corrosion fix in 2019. Boeing and Rolls-Royce addressed premature corrosion of engine fan blades by modifying the design to prevent cracking and corrosion. The Trent 1000 also got fuel burn improvements in early operational packages A, B, and C, which improved fuel efficiency. Package C is delivering approximately 1% better than specified. GE's GEnx engine received anti-ice updates in 2013, which mitigated ice crystal ingestion issues in storm conditions through updated anti-ice procedures and maintenance recommendations. Upgrade of titanium parts in 2017: Boeing collaborated with Norsk Titanium to supply higher-quality, 3D-printed titanium components, particularly for fuselage plates—aiming to reduce costs (~$3m per aircraft) and improve reliability. Resolving Fuselage Join & Tail Fit Issues (2020–2022): Boeing addressed improperly installed horizontal stabilizers and fuselage shimming defects. From 2020 to 2022, deliveries were paused to conduct comprehensive inspections. These “join inspections” are now part of the regular production process to maintain consistency and safety. Boeing has completed the five-year repair campaign addressing thin fuselage gaps across hundreds of 787s—marking the end of the "repair factory" work. Comparing the aircraft In 2018, the A330-900 was priced at $297m compared to the 787-9 at $282m. Discounts of 50% are typical. A330-900s are valued at between $73-$117m. Hawaiian's 787-9s, bought in 2018, were priced between $100m and $ 115m. The 787-9 leases for approximately $950,000 to $1 million per month, and the A330-900 for ~ $850,000 per month. These two aircraft are priced closely because they offer virtually the same performance. The 787-9 started with a more extended range, but Airbus has tweaked the A330-900's range to close the gap. When putting the key numbers together, we see the following. Deployed range (not total capable range) shows a 1.7% difference, and in terms of fuel burn in gallons/ASM, a 7.7% difference. You can see a more detailed table here. [caption id="attachment_101323" align="aligncenter" width="744"] SKAILARK; AirInsight[/caption] Summarizing the numbers, we have this. [caption id="attachment_101327" align="aligncenter" width="248"] SKAILARK; AirInsight[/caption] The A330-900 has a slightly higher fuel burn, but as mentioned above, its market value is likely to be lower than the sticker price suggests. Even the $117m shown is likely higher than the market; we have seen values in the ~$75m range. That suggests the A330-900 trades at a discount to the 787-9. After all, the 787-9 leases at ~$100,000 more per month. If the A330-900 leases at 12% less, burns ~8% more fuel, but has equivalent range, then it is the better deal, excluding other considerations. Of course, one can assume there are other considerations. Conclusion The key message here is how close these two are in terms of the tradeoff. Both aircraft offer operators an excellent choice.
