Air Niugini gives Airbus its first A220-100 order since last year |

The direct order from Air Niugini for up to nine Airbus A220s is a welcome one for Airbus, especially for the A220-100. The smallest type in the Airbus family hasn’t sold well in the past two years. Actually, Air Niugini’s order for six is more than the combined five net sales for 2021 and 2022. In the Airbus orders list for 2023, the A220-100 has been absent altogether. It shows a total of 95 aircraft on order, including the ACJ TwoTwenty, of which 56 had been delivered until the end of September. The only A220 orders this year have been for 33 -300s, with Delta ordering twelve in January and another twelve in June, plus nine confirmed in June by Qantas. The last A220-100 order is from January 2022, when lessor Azorra ordered two. Two private customers bought an ACJ in May and June, but including three cancelations, that made only one net order in 2022. The last delivery was in October of that year to Comlux, one of six deliveries in 2022. The net score for 2021 was four sales after ten aircraft were canceled. Nigeria’s Ibom Air ordered seven November and so did ITA Airways that same month. The first ITA A220-100 has emerged from the paint shop in the past few days. The first A220-100 of ITA Airways has emerged from the paint shop only very recently. (ITA Airways) Going back another twelve months to 2020, the net score for the A220-100 was actually minus four. The type won two orders from Comlux and four from private customers, but there were ten cancelations during the year. In 2019, Airbus had to delete even fifteen orders for the ‘cute little airplane’, as former Chief Commercial Officer John Leahy used to call the aircraft when it was still the Bombardier CS100. Ai Vanuatu ordered two in February 2019, followed by ten from an undisclosed customer in June and six by lessor Nordic Aviation Capital. In the first six months in 2018 as an Airbus program, the A220-100 won no orders. Replacing the Fokkers For Air Niugini, the -100 might work perfectly. The airline said in August that it had selected the A220 as the replacement aircraft for its aging Fokker F70s and F100s and intended to order eleven aircraft. Airbus specified today that this includes six A220-100s and three -300s, while the airline will lease two more -100s from third parties. With the two A220 models, Air Niugini can significantly grow the extent of its network, thanks to the much bigger range (up to 6.390 kilometers) compared to the Fokkers. The main purpose of the aircraft will be to operate on the network out of Port Moresby to the different islands in the region of Papua New Guinea. With the trend of up-gauging, the A220-100 has lost some of its popularity to the larger -300. It is the same with the A319neo, which has only won orders for 61 aircraft, of which sixteen had been delivered by the end of September. If the reports are correct, Tibet Airlines finally took delivery of another A319neo in the past few days.
