We have been tracking Airbus closely this year, its three delivery target resets creating tension across the supply chain and customer base. Today, there's some news on the key program, the A320 family. Airbus A320neo: The Panel Problem That Won't Quite Go Away When Airbus reported 1Q26 results this week, CEO Guillaume Faury offered a specific commitment: the A320neo fuselage panel quality issue would be "almost completely behind us" by the end of June, with production and deliveries resynchronized before the second half. That's a clear target. It's also an admission that five months after the problem first emerged, it is still actively suppressing deliveries. The Origin The problem first surfaced in December 2025, when Airbus confirmed a quality deviation in certain A320-family fuselage skin panels — exterior metal panels produced outside required thickness tolerances during a milling process by Spanish tier-2 supplier Sofitec Aero. EASA confirmed that the issue centers on fuselage section 12 — the structure in the region of the forward passenger door — where thickness deviations, combined with certain repair conditions, could affect structural integrity. The scale was immediately significant: 177 in-service A320neo family aircraft were subject to EASA's inspection requirement, alongside 451 aircraft still in production that were required to be inspected before delivery, though only several dozen are estimated to have actually contained non-conforming panels. The inspection burden itself, applied across the production line, was the primary delivery suppressant. The Sofitec Dimension The supplier story is more troubling than Airbus's public communications acknowledged. A local union informed Airbus of alleged irregularities in the manufacturing process at Sofitec Aero — including the subsequent manipulation of dates in production records and the use of expired sealants and paints. Airbus deployed its own staff directly to the Spanish plant to intensify quality controls. The problem was not just a technical deviation — it was a supplier governance failure. This is not some small thing - Airbus was at pains last year to emphasize that it was placing its own people in the supply chain to ensure better quality control. Which raises uncomfortable questions about Sofitec's oversight. Airbus was placing its own people in supply chain facilities specifically to prevent this kind of failure. That it happened anyway at Sofitec is the question Airbus hasn't answered. Sofitec's website has the following tagline: 'Accuracy is an attitude.' Hmm. The Q1 2026 Delivery Impact The panel issue is the primary explanation for Airbus's weak 1Q delivery performance — 114 aircraft against Boeing's 143. Faury described the corrective action as involving "quite a bit of work" and confirmed the resync target is the end of June. The 1Q miss was not demand-driven — Airbus's backlog of 9,031 aircraft is the strongest in its history. It was entirely supply-side, rooted in a single Spanish tier-2 supplier's quality failure. But as noted above, Airbus ultimately owns this. Our tracking identified the softening delivery rate early. At first, it appeared to be CFM LEAP-related, but clearly, there was more at play. The Boeing Parallel — And the Difference The comparison to Boeing's March wiring issue is inevitable — and instructive. Boeing's wiring issue was caught internally before any aircraft reached a customer, resolved in ten days, and involved no supplier governance concerns. The Airbus panel issue originated at a tier-2 supplier, involved potential record manipulation, reached 177 in-service aircraft, and has now suppressed deliveries for five months. Boeing's MAX delivery rate may have also been impacted in April, and we expect to see this in the official numbers in two weeks. Both are quality escapes. They are not the same kind of quality escape. And that is a crucial item to consider. The "Administrative Hitch" Footnote Airbus also cited an "administrative hitch," alongside the panel rework, as a 1Q delivery factor. Airbus has not elaborated publicly on what that means. Faury confirmed that an "administrative matter" held up the transfer of nearly 20 aircraft to China, which he described as causing a "desynchronization" between production and delivery, noting, "Almost 20, that's big for one quarter, especially the first quarter." Our March reporting identified these aircraft in Tianjin. We questioned CFM about this issue, and their response sounded odd at the time: "...delays in Tianjin have nothing to do with engine supply. Root cause is temporary resource allocation issues across several entities involved in the delivery process." Further investigation revealed that CAAC may play a disruptive role in Tianjin FAL's deliveries. In short, in China, politics is an industry that trumps and other. For a company managing a 9,000+ aircraft backlog across multiple programs, an unexplained "administrative hitch" that is suppressing deliveries deserves more daylight than it has received. Bottom Line Airbus expects the panel issue to be "almost completely behind us" by the end of June. The commitment is specific, and the resync timeline is credible — Airbus has resolved supplier quality issues before, and the second-half delivery ramp is a pattern the company has executed repeatedly. But the Sofitec governance failure raises a question that a June resync doesn't fully answer: how many other tier-2 suppliers are operating with similar quality gaps that haven't yet surfaced? Boeing's recovery narrative has been built on the answer to that question. Airbus now has to answer it too.
