How do the new A350F and 777-8F freighters stack up?

The Airbus A350F and Boeing 777-8F are new large twin-engine freighters at the top of the freighter market. The A350F is based on the A350-1000, while the 777-8F is based on the 777-8 passenger model. But how will they stack up against each other in terms of capabilities and economics? Let’s look at the data and specifications, especially in light of changing market conditions. The Freighter Market is Changing Boeing has long held a dominant position in the freighter market, with more than 90% market share of factory and converted freighter aircraft. The company currently builds the 767-300F and 777F factory freighters based on older models, and will introduce the 777-8F after the 777-9 passenger version is certified. The 777-8F could enter service between 2029 and 2031, depending on which prognosticators you believe. Notably, the two current freighters, the 767-300F and 777F, do not meet ICAO standards for production after 2028, and Boeing just received an FAA waiver to produce an additional 35 777F models. These regulations will drive a major fleet transition, as two new freighter programs approach market entry. The waiver for the existing 777F likely means the 777-8F will be delayed until after the 2028 restrictions take effect, likely in 2029. Some experts, however, have suggested the EIS might not occur until 2031 should further program delays occur. Airbus is re-entering the factory-built freighter market with the A350F, supplementing factory-supported A330 and A321 conversion programs. With more than 100 orders, Airbus is finding initial success with the new technology A350F freighter model based on its largest current offering, the A350-1000. The aircraft is looking at certification in 2027 and entry into service shortly thereafter, in late 2027 or early 2028. Competitive Dynamics are Changing Given the imminent demise of the 767-300F due to emissions restrictions, we will focus on the two forthcoming models and compare their capacity, capabilities, and economics. Because both the A350F and 777-8F aim to replace the existing 777X, we will compare and contrast all three models in our analysis. Source: AirInsight Analysis Interestingly, when examining the passenger aircraft families from which the new models are derived, Airbus chose the larger variant to base the freighter on, while Boeing chose the smaller model, as it has historically done with factory freighters. Typically, smaller models offered better payload and range considerations to optimize cargo capabilities. But those rules of thumb don't apply to lighter-weight aircraft, and the A350F will be the first composite-fuselage freighter. Because Boeing chose not to build a cargo version of the 787 Dreamliner, the freighter market lacks a low-weight, high-capacity alternative. The lighter airframe improves the A350F's efficiency over the conventional 777F and 777-8F. The payload-to-Maximum Take-Off Weight (MTOW) ratio favors the A350F at 34.8% versus 32.3% for the 777-8F and 30.1% for the older 777F. Similarly, a comparison of two-engine thrust to MTOW shows much lower thrust per pound for the A350F at 27.6% than for the 777-8F at 33.4%. That should translate to lower fuel burn. As of this writing in early October 2026, the A350F is leading in orders with 108 versus 89 for the delayed 777-8F. While this isn’t much of a lead, it signals a major market shift: Boeing is no longer the sole player in the factory-built freighter market. Airbus, which first competed in wide-body aircraft, then added narrow-bodies, now appears to compete more effectively in the freighter market, after a couple of early false steps with the A330-200F and early P2F conversion programs. This time around, Airbus has a viable product, backed by orders from many of the big names in air cargo. The high degree of commonality with the A350-1000 passenger version also helps in MRO and training activities, reducing costs for existing passenger aircraft operators. The Incumbent - The Boeing 777F Today’s freighter benchmark is the Boeing 777F, based on the Boeing 777-200LR. The aircraft was introduced in 2009 and quickly replaced the 747-8F as the market's most fuel-efficient model. Image: Lufthansa While the basic 777 aircraft entered service in 1995, some 31 years ago, a second generation of the 777 that included the 777F was introduced in 2009, with the aircraft including new raked wingtips and engine improvements, with only GE-90 engines for the second-generation 777-200LR, 777F, and 777-300ER. The smallest of the three aircraft we are comparing, the 777F can accommodate 27 96x125” pallets on the main cargo deck, with another 10 pallets in the lower compartment. The 777F is a very capable aircraft, able to carry 107 tonnes of cargo and fly 5,000 nm. The Upgraded Model - The Boeing 777-8F The Boeing 777-8F is the freighter model of the 777-X family that is replacing the existing Boeing 777. The new model, while based on the existing airframe, is longer than the existing 777F, which is based on the 777-200. The 777-8F is similar in size to the larger 777-300ER that became the mainstay of the passenger fleet. The larger 777-9 has a higher capacity than the existing 777-300ER and will be the largest model being sold when it enters the market. Image: Boeing Unfortunately, the 777-X family, initially scheduled for introduction in 2020, is now facing a seven-year delay from its original timeline, with the freighter model to follow a couple of years later. Rather than being first to market, Airbus may beat Boeing to the market with the A350F freighter. The 777-8F is a large aircraft with the highest payload and cargo capacity in the freighter market. The 777-8F's calling card is size and capability, contrasting with the A350F's efficiency and advanced technology. The New Challenger - The Airbus A350F After its recent first flight, the A350F has taken another step toward becoming a second viable supplier of purpose-built cargo aircraft. Based on the A350-1000, the aircraft is exceptionally fuel-efficient and offers low operating costs. The A350F provides 94% of the 777-8F’s payload while using fuel-efficient engines with only 97,000 pounds of thrust versus 133,300 pounds of thrust. That 28% lower thrust requirement translates into a significant advantage in fuel burn, which matters when fuel costs are high, as they are today. image: Airbus The following graphic shows the extensive use of structural composites on the A350F. When compared to the conventional metal structure of the 777-8F, the efficiency of the A350F provides it with an advantage in operating costs, and for operators who “cube out” before they weight out, depending on the type of cargo carried by air. image: Airbus The Airbus A350 passenger series provides a baseline for product support, with the aircraft highly compatible with common systems and 95% of parts. With global service centers and operators, MRO for the A350F, as a new entrant, should not be a problem for cargo operators. With a focus on efficiency and high-tech design, the A350F targets lower fuel burn, emissions, and operating costs to differentiate it from competing Boeing aircraft. The Bottom Line: Delivering on Promises Will be Critical Airbus and Boeing each need to produce their new freighter models on time, particularly given the ICAO restrictions, high fuel costs, and airlines' need to replace older freighters with newer models. The timing is perfect for introducing new airplanes, but Boeing is now 7 years late with the 777-X, and Airbus has struggled to ramp A350 production due to supply-chain constraints since the global pandemic. The player that executes and delivers aircraft on time will likely win the new freighter competition. Delivering on economic promises will also matter, particularly fuel burn in a high-fuel-cost environment. Airbus, with a lighter aircraft that carries nearly the same weight as Boeing's heavier model, should have an advantage in operating economics. Engines will also be a major part of the economics and reliability story. The Rolls-Royce Trent XWB 97 is already in service and through its initial learning curve, while the GE9X is yet to enter service and will need an initial shakeout period. New engines always seem to need tweaks, so Airbus may have a slight first-mover advantage with its new freighter technology. While Airbus's last efforts were on a smaller airframe that wasn't as competitive, the A350F appears to be a very capable aircraft that will impact the global air freight market. The question isn't whether it will be successful, but whether it can compete and win major orders from FedEx, UPS, and DHL. We believe competition improves everything, and freighter operators will have two strong choices. For outsized freight, Boeing will likely hold an advantage, but for efficiency, the nod goes to Airbus. Fleet planners will have an interesting choice ahead.
