With Qantas cancelling orders for additional A380 aircraft, and Emirates negotiating with Airbus regarding the future of A380 and A350 orders, the question of how long the A380 can survive is once again in the headlines.
Analysis
The A380 order book has been tenuous for some time, but continues in production at a slow rate. The newest A380 customer, ANA in Japan, recently took delivery of its first superjumbo, which it will use on the popular Hawaiian service. These newest aircraft should still be in operation in 2040.
There is no question that the A380 is a niche airplane. No North American carrier has yet to oder the model, and none are left operating legacy Boeing
747 jumbos either. The market on this side of the Atlantic has changed, with multiple hubs and international service points providing frequency and connecting opportunities that don’t require large aircraft.
