JetZero briefed the media last Friday about its Z4 commercial aircraft under development, and why it represents a disruption for the industry. JetZero is building a prototype blended wing body aircraft (BWB), which looks like a game changer for the commercial aircraft industry. [caption id="attachment_91065" align="aligncenter" width="640"] image: JetZero[/caption] As can easily be seen in the illustration above, the difference between the JetZero Z4 and other tube-and-wing aircraft is the aerodynamic configuration of its BWB design. That design enables lower drag and results in a fuel burn advantage of about 50% over today’s equivalent aircraft. That’s enough to move the disruption needle for airlines to order the more advanced design, which also happens to be sized in the center of the market. Innovation Can Move Slowly JetZero CEO Tom O'Leary stated that the BWB design concept has existed for three or more decades. Hence, the relevant question is why nobody has taken this step forward with new technology until now. The answers range from risk-aversion and waiting for a demonstration that the technology works to daunting financial requirements between $8 billion and $15 billion to develop and certify an “all-wing” design. As with most technologies, there often comes a "right time" for innovation when several elements come together, and JetZero founder and CEO believes that the time for disruption is now. JetZero held a media day last Friday to address those questions and report on the program's progress, which has been moving steadily behind the scenes. With the flight of a full-size demonstration aircraft, paid for under a $235 million US Air Force contract, scheduled for 2027, the probability of a technology disruption coming to market has increased tremendously. [caption id="attachment_91067" align="aligncenter" width="632"] image: JetZero[/caption] JetZero benefits from NASA's more than $1 billion in R&D efforts as it examines alternative technologies. Apart from the aerodynamic shape and design, most everything else for the Z4 is off-the-shelf technology. The technologies that support today’s aircraft will be used on the Z4, from engines to fly-by-wire systems and actuators to avionics. As we have been reporting, JetZero has established partnerships with Delta and United and is working with RTX on engine integration, power units, and nacelles. Alaska Airlines is also an early investor in the program. The company is now poised to raise private equity financing for its massive development program and bring the new technology to reality. The confidence level of the JetZero team is high, and there is a belief in the company that they will deliver on time and budget. The JetZero Z4 Interior is also Disruptive The Z4 is aimed squarely at the Middle of the Market, which we at AirInsight have written about extensively. Essentially, there is a gap between narrow-body and wide-body airplanes that the Z4 can fill, with a degree of customization that conventional designs cannot compete with. The interior of the cabin mock-up is enormous, and the Z4 cabin is divided into six different zones surrounding a central service area for flight attendants. Each cabin can be individually configured, from first-class suites to business-class mini-suites, premium economy configurations, and comfortable economy cabins. The first two customizable cabins are near the front of the aircraft, with the four customizable cabins behind them in the rear. While only the outboard cabins will have windows accessible to passengers, the inboard cabins will be equipped with capabilities for outside views from cameras, combined with other information or entertainment options. The results could be international four-class configurations with around 180 seats, three-class domestic cabins with around 260 seats, and all economy cabins with around 300 seats, depending on airline preferences for each cabin and service class. With two large main entry doors and extra-wide aisles, access to the aircraft for boarding and deplaning is simplified, and turnaround times are comparable to today’s smaller narrow-body airliners. The individual bays can customize each of the six zones, which will disrupt conventional service levels. The cabins enable innovative airline service levels, whether a lounge for carriers like Emirates or all-economy seating for an airline like Ryanair, and multiple combinations. We walked through the Cabin Lab with Scott Savian, JetZero’s Chief Product Officer. The team has strived to transition from an ample interior space into the six “humanized” cabins created around the cabin's internal structure. The company plans to offer wider seats in every class, providing an elevated experience for passengers. Production Plans and Development Progress The site selection process for a new factory is nearing completion, with an announcement likely coming prior to the Paris Air Show. That factory will be slightly larger than the Boeing Everett facilities for the 747, as the wide wingspan of the Z4 requires a lot of space. When completed, it will become one of the largest factories in the world. The Conceptual Design Review, System Requirements Review, and Preliminary Design Review have all been completed. The Critical Design Review is scheduled for completion in the second quarter of 2025, and we expect it to be completed before the end of next month. [caption id="attachment_91066" align="aligncenter" width="640"] image: JetZero[/caption] An Iron Bird is up and running as a testbed for electronics and systems on the airplane, and in its full-size configuration, takes up a large hangar. The engines for the test aircraft have been selected and delivered. Avionics and flight control software are well underway and under testing, and the team is confident to move to the first flight in 2027. The Bottom Line JetZero has many elements for market disruption and success lined up and ready to go. But execution and delivering on its promises will not be easy. FAA and international certifications will be required, and the FAA certification staff will also need to learn about the aerodynamic qualities of the BWB design. Execution risk is always present with a start-up that is still growing its staffing, as unknowns always seem to crop up in aviation, despite slack being added to schedules for that purpose. Funding is also an issue that always crops up, sometimes even when private equity firms firmly back companies, should delays occur. The company has recruited a strong team, is leveraging existing technologies whenever possible, and has managed risks well to date. JetZero may turn out to be “the little engine that could,” as its team exudes confidence and an “I know I can” attitude.
