Tom O’Leary is the CEO and co-founder of JetZero. We had a one-on-one chat earlier today. Tom explained the company’s focus on execution and culture, and how they will compete with Boeing and Airbus with the forthcoming Z4 “all-wing” airliner. Our conversation ranged from how a start-up can overcome high barriers to entry to fund and build a radically new aircraft design to the unique passenger comfort that a wider multi-segment cabin can offer.
With a demonstration aircraft underway and on schedule to fly by 2027 to validate the performance and environmental benefits of an “all-wing” design, and a DoD contract to fund that demonstrator, JetZero has just completed a major milestone and design review. The company has partnerships with multiple industry players, including Northrop-Grumman’s Scaled Composites unit that will build the fuselage, and RTX, which will provide engines and multiple other components. Leveraging proven technology as a start-up will enable a smoother certification process with the FAA.
