Lufthansa Group has made up its mind: the airline has ordered 40 Airbus A220-300s plus 20 purchase rights and 40 Boeing MAX 8s plus 60 purchase rights for its own needs and that of new subsidiary CityAirlines. It has also secured new purchase rights for 40 A320neo family aircraft, it said on Tuesday. The news must come as a huge blow to Embraer, which has been aggressively pitching the E2 family with Lufthansa.

Lufthansa has been actively sounding out all three major airframers for a huge aircraft order to renew and grow its short and medium-haul fleet. CEO Carsten Spohr said in March that a final decision was likely in early 2024, but the decision has been approved by the supervisory board today.
