PW Delivers first GTF Advantage to United Airlines

Why is this Important The GTF Advantage engine is a major upgrade of the Pratt & Whitney GTF engine, the PW1100G-JM. The GTF Advantage features a state-of the-art hot section that will deliver up to twice the time on wing when compared to the existing GTF engine. The new engine also generates 4-8% more takeoff thrust, enabling longer range. The PW GTF had a difficult introduction, with hot section reliability issues a particular problem that has now been fully solved. The contamination problem with powdered metal has addressed through major engine overhauls and parts replacement, but cost airlines a lot of downtime. Pratt & Whitney understands the need for better reliability, and a design goal of the GTF Advantage engine was to improve time-on wing. With the GTF Advantage specification, Pratt & Whitney can now deliver on the promises that the initial GTF should have met, and promises both reliability and durability in addition to industry leading fuel burn. Retrofits for customers operating the current GTF will soon be able to upgrade their engines to the Advantage durability through a GTF Hot Section Plus upgrade option that can be installed during the next maintenance visit beginning in 2027. The Technical Details “It’s an evolution of the architecture and the design,” said Matt Teicholz, vice president and chief engineer for Commercial Engines at Pratt & Whitney, an RTX business. “I like to tell customers that if you were to put a GTF Advantage and a PW1100G-JM next to each other, no one’s actually going to be able to tell the difference. And that’s the point. It’s supposed to be seamless.” The challenge for Pratt & Whitney in extending the GTF Advantage time on wing was to attack the major cause of wear and tear - heat. To lower high heat levels in the engine core, PW engineers made aerodynamic improvements to increase airflow throughout the engines, starting with the compressor, which pressurizes incoming air. That added airflow, in turn, helps lower the temperature of the hot section, or the part of the engine where ignition takes place. “We have digital twins of every single serial number flying out there. Five thousand-plus engines. And we have models that simulate each one of those flights,” Teicholz said, noting engineers also combined data from fielded hardware inspections, advanced computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and P&W endurance testing. “That combination of advanced modeling and real-world data is what’s driven the design.” image: Pratt & Whitney Mitigating heat in the hot section itself required engineers to redesign the cooling holes in the blades of the turbine. Those improvements have focused on casting changes and improving the cooling that allows each airfoil to operate at temperatures well above the melting point of the metal. Existing coatings were optimized and new coatings introduced resulting from analysis of operations in sandy and salty environments. “While each of these technologies has field experience in other products, the combination is new for this engine and will be the most state-of-the-art hot section in the segment,” said Teicholz. The improvements in airflow also result in improved performance, delivering 4% more thrust at sea-level and 8% for airports at higher altitudes. That differential has the potential to open new routes because of the high altitude capabilities. The Bottom Line The fuel economy performance of the GTF engine is industry leading, but the durability of the engine, combined with the powdered-metal issue, have hindered the reputation of the engine. The second generation GTF solves both of those problems, particularly the hot section durability for the engines. The GTF Advantage will deliver on the full promise of the GTF, blending industry-leading fuel economy along with the durability expected from the Dependable Engines tag line from Pratt & Whitney. After a series of issues and a difficult entry into service, the GTF Advantage should provide the airlines what they need, fuel economy with durability. If the digital analytics are correct, that should happen.
