In collaboration with the Airlines Association of Southern Africa (AASA), we have tracked South Africa’s air traffic over several years.  The model lists up to three-quarters of the current calendar year.

Notes:

  • South Africa, like many markets, has a V-shaped traffic recovery.
  • Page 2 shows a surge in traffic at CPT, the code for Cape Town, and DUR, the code for Durban.  JNB (Johannesburg) shows a relative decline.
  • Page 4 shows Durban with the highest number of passengers/flights. Durban and Cape Town are prime local vacation markets, and traffic peaks during the December holidays.
  • Page 5 shows an interesting data point for international traffic – 2023 departures exceed arrivals for JNB and DUR – perhaps indicating emigration.
