Libyan carrier Buraq Air signed an MOU for the purchase of 10 Airbus A320neo family aircraft today at the Dubai Air Show. This is the first direct purchase of Airbus aircraft by the carrier, adding the airline as an Airbus customer.
Buraq Air
As Libya’s first private airline, it is based in Tripoli and currently operates three A320 aircraft obtained via lease. With Libyan aviation continuing to stabilize and grow, the 10 new aircraft will provide the fleet required for growth on additional routes.
“This agreement represents a significant step forward for Buraq Air as we continue to modernize our fleet and serve more destinations. The A320neo’s efficiency and flexibility will not only be central to strengthening our core network but will also provide a seamless platform for Medsky Airways, our key strategic partner, to jointly enhance passenger offering across both our carriers” said Fouzi Almiqalh, General Assembly President of Buraq Air.

New Direct Customer for Airbus
“We are delighted to welcome Buraq Air as a new Airbus customer of the A320 Family and we thank them for their confidence. This agreement reinforces the A320neo as the aircraft of choice for fleet modernisation and we are dedicated to supporting Buraq’s Air strategic expansion plan” said Benoit de Saint Exupery, Sr. VP Marketing at Airbus.
The Bottom Line
Airbus continues to expand its footprint in Africa with the popular A320neo family of aircraft in the Magreb region, which traditionally favored Boeing aircraft. This is a significant order as Libya stabilizes politically and its aviation sector continues to rebuild and grow, as success will likely lead to additional orders.
