Air India tweaks flights, IndiGo expands codeshare

Air India will tweak its international flight network starting next year, even as IndiGo has expanded its code-share agreement with Turkish Airlines to connect more US cities. Air India said on Monday that it will deploy its "best aircraft" to key gateways in Southeast Asia and Europe. This will complement the earlier deployment of its A350 and B777 with upgraded cabin interiors on multiple U.S. and UK routes. The airline will fly its retrofitted A320neo between Delhi and Bangkok from 16 January, offering refreshed interiors and adding a fourth daily Delhi-Bangkok service from 1 January. “The increased frequency connects Bangkok to several destinations in North America and Europe via Air India’s hub in Delhi. Travellers from cities such as New York, Chicago, Washington D.C., Toronto, Vancouver, London Heathrow, Frankfurt, Paris, Milan, and Amsterdam can take seamless one-stop flights to Bangkok via Delhi and vice-versa,” it added. Air India will also fly the erstwhile Vistara B787-9 aircraft on the Delhi-Frankfurt and Mumbai-Frankfurt routes, while the A321neo will fly on the Delhi-Singapore and Mumbai-Singapore routes. From 1st February, it will also tweak Delhi-Frankfurt and Delhi-Paris flight timings, allowing daytime and nighttime departures on each route in both directions. It has also retimed its daily flights on the Delhi-Sydney and Delhi-Melbourne routes to enable seamless two-way connectivity between Europe and Australia or points in Southeast Asia via Delhi. “This means travellers from London, Paris, and Frankfurt can now easily take one-stop connections to Sydney and Melbourne in Australia, and to points like Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and Ho Chi Minh City in Southeast Asia via Delhi,” the airline added. Air India, with a fleet of 300 planes, has been expanding massively since its privatization in 2022. The airline is strengthening its hubs in Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru to capture a slice of the traffic from Europe to Southeast Asia / Australia. Meanwhile, rival IndiGo said on Monday that, effective 18 December, it will have four new codeshare connections to Houston (IAH), Atlanta (ATL), Miami (MIA), and Los Angeles (LAX) via Istanbul in partnership with Turkish Airlines. The codeshare between the two airlines has now expanded to nine destinations across the US, including New York, Washington, Boston, Chicago, and San Francisco. “With our total connections to the US, now increasing to nine, we gladly offer even more avenues for business travellers, aspiring students as well as tourists & VFR (visiting friends & relatives). As we expand our global network and connect people with favoured destinations, we remain committed to delivering on our promise of providing affordable, on-time, courteous, and hassle-free travel experiences across our extensive network,” Vinay Malhotra, Head of Global Sales, IndiGo, said. India's largest airline, with a fleet of around 400 planes, is expected to take deliveries of its first ordered widebody Airbus A350 in 2027, marking its formal long-haul debut then, as things stand currently.
