Delays and Cancellations Impact 2.9 Million in Brazil

So far, 2.9 million travelers in Brazil have been impacted by flight delays and cancellations, according to data released by AirHelp. In 2022, the number of affected passengers has doubled in comparison to the previous year. Why is this happening? Flight delays Worldwide, the lack of personnel and the increase in flight demand have led to cancellations, delays, massive chaos, and queues. In Europe alone, we have seen thousands of passengers impacted across several airports like Amsterdam, Dublin, Heathrow, and more. Brazil has also felt the impact of these problems. This year, one in 54 Brazilian passengers has been impacted by a flight delay or cancellation (in 2021, it was one in 72). Brazil’s leading airlines are LATAM, GOL, and Azul. AirHelp believes up to 2.9 million travelers in Brazil have been impacted this year. Here is some troubling data on the subject: Delays and cancellations have increased by 226%, impacting 2.9 million travelers Delays of more than four hours increased almost six times, impacting 58.1 thousand passengers Flight cancellations have tripled, impacting over 423,000 passengers (versus 157,000 last year). The increase in delays and flight cancellations can be partially explained by the recovery of the Brazilian airline industry. The number of passengers across Brazilian airports has increased by over 70% so far in 2022, compared to 2021. The country has had 29.8 million passengers this year (versus 17.2 million passengers last year). Nonetheless, the increase in delays and cancellations has been more considerable than the increase in passengers signaling that the recovery is creating new problems for the travelers, said Luciano Barreto, Airhelp's General Director in Brazil. Why is this happening? That's the million-dollar question at the moment. Worldwide, we are seeing capacity constraints among airlines and airports. Delta, for instance, is reducing by 10% its summer schedule, as it is impossible for the airline to keep up. If you ask airlines, they signal staffing shortages, for example, lack of qualified pilots. Nonetheless, if you ask pilots, they'll say there is no such thing as a shortage (at least in the United States). There is also a psychological factor. We have had two years of crisis in which there weren't many flight delays because there weren't many flights at all. Now that the industry is bouncing back, we might feel things are worse than ever. But, if we go back to 2019, many airports worldwide, particularly Latin America, faced capacity constraints. According to a study made by The Netherlands Enterprise Agency in 2020, the weakness factors in the main Brazilian airports were the evaluation of airlines' performance and passengers’ experience in various items of infrastructure, attendance, and services, as well as monitoring performance of various airport processes such as check-in, security inspection, baggage restitution, among others. From a passenger’s perspective, the main weakness was the excessive time consumed on passengers’ processing. How many passengers have the Brazilian airlines had in 2022? Between January and April 2022, Brazil has had 29.8 million passengers, according to data provided by the country’s Civil Aviation Authority. LATAM has regained its spot as Brazil’s leading airline, carrying 9.24 million passengers, and holding a 30.97% market share. GOL has carried 8.67 million passengers, holding a 29.05% market share, and bouncing back to profitability after two years of crisis. Finally, Azul Linhas Aéreas has dropped to the third spot in Brazil (after being number one all through 2021), carrying 8.48 million passengers and a 28.42% share.
