The Embraer E195-E2 has a smaller user base than the Airbus A220-300. Airbus has the massive advantage of marketing the A220 as part of a combination deal. Embraer has to go into each E2 vs A220 campaign with one card, whereas Airbus has several but typically has two. Embraer has long said that when the E195-E2 and the A220-300 are compared side by side, theirs has better economics. We use the operational data from Skailark to compare these aircraft. A few airlines operate the E2 and A220s. Six operate E195-E2s, and five operate E190-E2s. Three operate the A220-100 and 13 operate the A220-300. The market for these "crossover jets" is small but important enough that they have attracted some big-name operators. Well, we now have the data that suggests they are correct. The chart lists the relative fuel burn and stage lengths at which the E2 and A220s operate. We include the E175 for context. The A220-100 flies slightly longer stages than the E190-E2, and fuel burn looks competitive. The E195-E2 flies slightly longer stages than the A220-300 with what appears to be nearly identical fuel burn rates. The following chart illustrates how the E195-E2s numbers have improved as the operator base has grown. Based on the data compiled by Skailark, the Embraer is now performing as well as, and perhaps better than, the A220-300. Since the E2 models are relatively lighter than their Airbus competitors, fuel burn should favor the Embraers. The A220 models have longer ranges and relatively more seats, which gives the Airbus models an advantage. If an airline does not need 3,600 miles of range, the E2 models are the better choice. Embraer needs to use this data, as it's an outside, unbiased source that supports their claim.
