The FAA issued an amended type certificate for the Boeing 737 MAX 7 today, along with an updated Production Limitation Record authorizing Boeing to begin manufacturing the aircraft for delivery. Almost a decade after the MAX 7 was first announced, the smallest variant in the family is finally cleared.
The fixes that got it there: updated flight-control software, a revised flight crew alerting system, and a redesigned engine anti-ice system — the last of these addressing the specific issue that had been the long-standing holdup, an overheating risk in the engine inlet that could weaken surrounding structure. The FAA said it will keep safety inspectors on site at Boeing’s production facilities monitoring the manufacturing process directly, including Boeing’s Safety Management System, rather than stepping back now that certification has cleared.
